This book chronicles the unforgettable account of one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history. It is the story of Dave Pelzer, who was brutally beaten and starved by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother: a mother who played tortuous, unpredictable games--games that left him nearly dead. He had to learn how to play his mother's games in order to survive because she no longer considered him a son, but a slave; and no longer a boy, but an "it."
Dave's bed was an old army cot in the basement, and his clothes were torn and raunchy. When his mother allowed him the luxury of food, it was nothing more than spoiled scraps that even the dogs refused to eat. The outside world knew nothing of his living nightmare. He had nothing or no one to turn to, but his dreams kept him alive--dreams of someone taking care of him, loving him and calling him their son.

Once I started reading this book, I did not ...

Once I started reading this book, I did not want to put it down. I am so grateful for having discovered, ' A Child Called It", as I was severely abused from the ages 5 to 17 years old. This book has started an inner healing process. As I started reading, I started crying, crying so loudly that I started wailing. Uncontrollable tears rolling down my cheeks, and many, many tissues. I applaud Dave Pelzer for using his torturous past to help bring healing to so many people. I can not wait to read his other books. If you can read this review Dave, I want to say Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you.

Wow!

Wow! What a book. It completely floored me emotionally, grounded me. Throughout the entire book I wanted to rescue this little boy. Hold him and show him true love. If you are looking for a book to make you feel something, this is it. It is deep and a bit depressing, but deffinitly a book you should read at least once I. Your life.

It's touching me till the core of my heart
By Margaret
I had no had a perfect childhood myself, but this books beats it up.i couldn't imagine that such things are possible in America, and in that wonderful area of San Francisco,a place of dream and a paradise in my mind. it seems to be that I know nothing about it and it's the same real life of sick and poor people that are usual in Russia and who were described in writings of Dostoevsky many many years ago. This book is so deep and so touching,it makes me be in touch with my own memories,to look at them like from a distance and to understand myself more. I have such an empathy for the author, and it's scary to look at myself in a mirror now because my eyes are so wild opened in a horror that such a life could be faced by a little boy...who knows, while we are passing by one of those ideal homes on the road, may be one or their habitants is eating his own womit and loosing his last hope in such a shiny and happy day for other people..and this ignorance, unbelievable ignorance of so close people around-its tru,it's like a snakes mantra which holds on people minds and makes them mindless and yet so normal..why this boy couldn't tell people about what was going on? Why would he bear all of this torture without any word? It's still love to his parents,a fantasy which dies so painfully that you need to make your mind numb in a way to survive ...thank you for this book..I just wonder, why such families and such mother and fathers -they are like a copy of each other? I recognize my family too, with all of that food issues ( mom was hiding the food, beating till the blood,no proper clothes and so on) but this case in this book is much harder..and it's hard to tell people because they don't believe it happened, they accuse you in telling the stories, because it's hard to believe to those people who never faced it ( thanks God). It's even hard to remember, trying to Imagine it didn't exist...people are closing their eyes on such cases too, especially when your mother appeals as a decent woman to other families, and your family seems to be Normal...while its so,it's hard to be alive to yourself and your own experience, after your Mother makes a face that nothing happened, you try to convince yourself...till you grown up as an adult with lots of problems with your body acceptance, work and personal life, and the question-am I that bad and do I really deserve that punishment, and trying to convince yourself that your mother was right you make so ridiculous stories out of your own life, that a good psychotherapy doctor would fall in a maze trying to solve them... I understand this author and want to read more of him.
It was probably hard to write so open about it,but it's a big work,I respect it so much
