very good

I used to be a huge fan of Diana Palmer until all of her books started sounding the same. Maybe she should stop putting out so many and go for quality and different scenarios than quantity.That said, this is one of her books I still have and reread occassionally. Hunter is a half-breed indian who thinks that Jennifer is too much a "cover girl". She is in fact a top geologist whose looks have actually hindered her. She is in a male dominated field, working with Hunter (a chief of security) trying to uncover an ore that rebel countries are also looking to find and sparks fly. I recommend this DP work. Both of these characters were briefly mentioned in "His Girl Friday" or "Hoodwinked". I can't remember which.

Sweet Sparring Romance

FINAL DECISION: This is a light novel with a sparring romance between the hero and heroine. A cross-cultural romance with characters who are good people and compassionate, I enjoyed their interplay and the lack of cruel behavior by the hero.

THE STORY: Jennifer Marist is a blond geologist who works in a male field and has been separated from most men as a result. She is twenty-seven but hasn't had a serious relationship because of her career. Phillip Hunter is chief of security for Ritter Oil and is tasked with secret operations. When Jennifer's work requires her to spend a week in the desert, Hunter is sent along to protect her. Hunter is determined to not succumb to his attraction to Jennifer. As a Native American, he has sworn never to get involved with a white woman again. So his predicament is this -- keep Jennifer at a distance while protecting her.

OPINION: I really liked the connection between Hunter and Jennifer. This book was originally published as a category romance and thus is short and had restrictions on the length and content at the time it was written. Despite this, however, the sweet romance between Hunter and Jennifer shines through. I especially like how the two characters spar with one another and how Hunter has made a habit of rescuing Jennifer from the trouble she gets into. Hunter is one of the sweet Palmer heroes...compassionate and gentle rather than rude and angry.

WORTH MENTIONING: At times Palmer heroes are exceptionally cruel to the heroines because they either misunderstand the motivations of the heroine or don't appreciate her innocence. Hunter doesn't want to get involved with Jennifer, but he is much kinder toward her than might be expected in a Palmer book.

CONNECTED BOOKS: HUNTER is connected with HIS GIRL FRIDAY but can be read as a standalone.

Can't put down!

This is one of my all time favorite books!It was originally published back in the 90's and I read it when it was newly published. Now I found it again, thanks to Amazon.com. I'll reread it often. Hunter is the ideal hero. An alpha male before alphas were popular. Get this book, you will not regret it.

Master of Emotion: A Journeyman Piece

YA speculative fiction isn't usually my thing (I usually go for meatier fare), but I've been devouring a lot of different books lately and the premise of this plot seemed intriguing. I confess, once I got to the action sequences, I couldn't put it down until the climax resolved. Unfortunately, that was 4:30am.

Ms. Huff does a pretty good job of capturing the emotional walls built up by an isolated teenager, as well as his starvation for human contact and blossoming of character when he finally connects with someone he trusts. I also liked the camaraderie between Beau and his twin brother, Bryce, his lifeline to humanity until Rose helps him break out of his shell.

The premise is familiar, although the treatment is well-done. I liked this book and look forward to reading the sequel, Supreme Chancellor of Stupidity.

About the Author
Norman Maclean (1902-1990), woodsman, scholar, teacher, and storyteller, grew up in the Western Rocky Mountains of Montana and worked for many years in logging camps and for the United States Forestry Service before beginning his academic career. An absolutely beautiful book. Currently sitting in my local coffee shop with blotchy cheeks and mascara running down my face.

I don't usually write reviews, but I was compelled to write one for this book. I am a writer, not a fisherman. I actually don't really like fishing nor know anything about it. That didn't make me any less spellbound by this tale.

The writing is gorgeous and precise and sly and so unexpected beautiful and logical and funny and emotional. It reads differently than the books I'm used to reading. There's no faux suspense. There's no tricks or shock value. It's just a beautiful story.

It took me a little while to get completely invested. I'd say I read the first 30 pages slowly, and then the remainder all at once (of the title story).

I know this isn't a great book review, but just wanted to add my opinion. I'm a 26 year old female who works in the tech industry. My one fishing experience was when I caught a fish with my grandpa when I was 7 and it was bleeding and I cried for two days. I loved this book. Don't discount it because it's about fishing. It is beautiful and perfect, or maybe I should say "more perfect."

This is not a book one easily puts down. Norman Maclean wrote about what he loved, and his love showed in what he wrote. Probably aren't too many people reading this review that haven't seen the movie "A River Runs Through It." The movie catches the gist of the first novella here, but doesn't quite do the book justice. Unfortunately for me, it took me a while to shed the image of Brad Pitt as Paul. Really wished I hadn't watched the movie so many years ago before reading the book. As the book was much better, and though Brad Pitt played the part well, I feel my imagination was held back just a bit in letting Paul's character develop fully as I read the novella. Still, my wife had a hard time getting me to the dinner table once I started reading.
"Logging, Pimping, and Your Pal Jim" I have learned is somewhat of a cult classic for those who love the woods and stories about the men who inhabit them. Years ago a pastor friend recommended the story to me, and I think it was the best gift he ever gave me.
"USFS 1919, The Ranger, the Cook and the Hole in the Sky" Is an autobiographical account of the early days of the U.S. Forest Service and the men who worked the woods. In telling the story you get a feel for Montana almost a hundred years ago, but that is true of all the stories in this book. It was a Montana full of loggers, loose women, cowboys and card games. When at the end of the story Norman ends up nursing back his health in the Hamilton whorehouse, (where better?) his first thought is, this is just like one of those old west whore houses my friend described to me, before he realizes that it is in fact the thing itself. The door on that house shuts behind it tales of a misspent youth in the wilds of a Montana that was still young itself.

"Now nearly all those I loved and did not understand when I was young are dead, but still I reach out to them.

"Of course, now I am too old to be much of a fisherman, and now of course I usually fish the big waters alone, although some friends think I shouldn't. Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise.

"Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.

"I am haunted by waters"

About the Author

Jon Marks is Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He is a past president of the General Anthropology Division of the American Anthropological Association and was the recipient of the AAA/Mayfield Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. He is the author of Why I Am Not a Scientist: Anthropology and Modern Knowledge (2009); What It Means to Be 98% Chimpanzee: Apes, People, and Their Genes (2002), which won the 2003 W. W. Howells Prize from the Biological Anthropology Section of the American Anthropological Association and the 2009 J. I. Staley Prize from the School for Advanced Research; and Human Biodiversity: Genes, Race, and History (1995).

Wonderfully surprised

This was a required reading for a Biological Anthropology course I took this semester, and I loved both! This book is very funny while really being able to drive home all the points. We read the entire book, and out of all the chapters, there were probably only one, maybe two, where my interest levels were down. Even though it is dense reading, the chapters are usually about 18-20 pages which was the perfect amount for me. Wonderful book that will teach you a lot and even give you some laugh out loud moments that just may surprise you.

Really fun read

Excellent book for mid-level anthropology classes. It would probably be great for intro-level as well but I think some of the nuances would be easily lost. The writing is engaging and interesting the whole way through. I even found myself chuckling at several parts. Highly recommend for anyone interested in anthropology, evolution, genetics, etc.
