About the Author
Joan Wall is a voice professor at Texas Woman's University, where she has taught diction courses for more than twenty years. She was a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), presenting seminars and workshops, and has had a celebrated international performing career, singing as a principal with the Metropolitan Opera, the Deutche Opera Berlin, and in concerts, operas, and recitals throughout the United States.

She has sung under the direction of such conductors as Erich Leinsdorf, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Boris Goldovsky, Alfred Wallenstein, Jean Morel, Fausto Cleva, Anshel Brusilow, and Paul Hindemith.

Wall is the author of International Phonetic Alphabet for Singers and coauthor of Diction for Singers, The Singer's Voice video series, Sing! Text and songs for voice class, and Excellence in Singing.

Robert Caldwell is president and CEO of Caldwell Publishing Company, which he founded in 1999. The company's mission is to make difficult ideas easier to teach and understand, particularly ideas in human anatomy and physiology.

Caldwell Publishing Company is now the parent company of PST...Inc., which he founded in 1987 to produce books for professional musicians.

He has authored and coauthored several best-selling books, including The Performer Prepares, Diction for Singers, the Singers' Edition Series, and his latest, the five-volume Excellence in Singing.

He has written, produced, directed, and animated several successful films, including the Human Voice series and Human Hearing series. These books and films are staples in colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad, including the Juilliard School of Music, the Peabody Conservatory of Music, and Indiana University.

An accomplished pianist and singer, having earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in music, he also lectures and conducts master classes. A native of southern Louisiana, he now resides in Redmond, Washington with his daughter, Katelyn.

Diction for Singers

With all due respect, well, yes, this book is of GENERAL use-there is a certain convenience in having all these languages in one book. And it maybe a way to begin this type of study. But, alas, there are so many aspects about diction not even addressed. Mistakes abound, and whereas those can be corrected, what about the information that is simply not included? The singer using this book will indeed gain a smattering of diction in all languages, but for adequate preparation for a classical singing career, singers should further their education with more specific textbooks on the languages in question. For instance Evelina Colorni's Italian book, Nico Castel's Spanish offerings, Glenn Paton's Gateway to German Diction, Thomas Grubb's Singing in French or Eileen Davis' new book Sing French. Shortcuts are exactly that, SHORTCUTS! If you are a serious singer, shortcuts just don't work. Get with it-study the details in order to be really competitive in your art. Would you shortcut your vocal technique? Of course not! Nor should you shortcut any part of your training. If you are a diction teacher of students targeting a performance career, please consider the future of your students and the foundation you are providing them.

This book is a must-have if you are to sing successfully. It is pretty easy to understand, and it introduces IPA without confusing everyone. There are a few mistakes in it but almost every book has mistakes in it. Excellent and easy to understand. Get it if you are a singer!

Reliquaries, one of the central art forms of the Middle Ages, have recently been the object of much interest among historians and artists. Until now, however, they have had no treatment in English that considers their history, origins and place within religious practice, or above all, their beauty and aesthetic value. In Strange Beauty, Cynthia Hahn treats issues that cut across the class of medieval reliquaries as a whole. She is particularly concerned with portable reliquaries that often contained tiny relic fragments, which purportedly allowed saints to actively exercise power in the world.

Above all, Hahn argues, reliquaries are a form of representation. They rarely simply depict what they contain; rather, they prepare the viewer for the appropriate reception of their precious contents and establish the “story” of the relics. They are based on forms originating in the Bible, especially the cross and the Ark of the Covenant, but find ways to renew the vision of such forms. They engage the viewer in many ways that are perhaps best described as persuasive or “rhetorical,” and Hahn uses literary terminology—sign, metaphor, and simile—to discuss their operation. At the same time they make use of unexpected shapes—the purse, the arm or foot, or disembodied heads—to create striking effects and emphatically suggest the presence of the saint.

This is NOT a coffee table picture book,but an in-depth study of the art, psychology and manufacture of reliquaries and the meanings behind them. Excellent treatise, but is more for the intellectual and student than for casual entertainment.

Errata file available

Let me preface this review by stating that I'm the author, and Amazon does not accept comments without star ratings. Otherwise, I would not include a rating at all.

This textbook received an excellent review in the journal Optometry and Vision Science, volume 78, page 185. It is true that my book, like many other books, contains errors. However, a complete errata file is available upon request (steinman at sco dot edu).

Great introductory book on stereo vision

I saw this book by chance at a local bookstore while browsing for other books on vision. After flipping through pages, I immediately decided to buy it. It is a good introductory book, yet is very comprehensive. I have just added references to this to book to wikipedia articles on binocular vision, stereopsis and autostereogram.

This book is inaccurate and has typos. The author realizes this and is making a new updated addition for this book. There are better books on binocular vision. My recommendation is to buy another binocular vision book!

I need to move to Sweet Water like yesterday.....*wink*

AWESOME!!!
We were introduced to Candace in the first book of the Wylde Bears trilogy and to say I was happy to read her story would be an understatement.
Candace a wolf shifter is quiet and reserved. She has been hurt and the betrayal ran deep but she has since moved on and likes her life the way it is even if she is lonely. Candace would rather face loneliness than to put her heart on the line just to have it broken again.
Trace Dakota is the polar opposite (no pun intended) of Candace. He is a big, bad, polar bear shifter who owns a bar and grille. He likes his women fast and easy with no strings attached. That is until he meets his mate Candace. Let the games begin.......

Hot smexy lovin, drama, humor, romance and lots of love. Who knew a polar bear shifter like Trace could be so romantic....*sigh* He is a bad ass ladies but with a soft side that comes with a heart of gold. No wonder Candace is hooked.
Loved this story and I would highly recommend this series, this author to any and all who ask. Jenika Snow does NOT disappoint!!!

sexy shifter series!

I had been waiting for this book for such a long time!! Yummy smexy dirty talkin bear!!!! This book has hands down the hottest mate meeting I have read in a long time!! I mean, damn girl, you will get naughty shivers!!

Trace is scrumptious, he is possessive, lewd and wickedly delightful! Once he scent his mate he is all in, even though he had a trust issues due to his past. Yup, I am totally in lust!

Candace is a great girl, she isn't meek or a pushover. She could have used a touch more sass, but is easily loveable.

The steam factor is off the charts!!! I lived Trace's naughty mouth, heck I would have loved even more!! I am a sucker for a dirty talker!! There is some serious smexy action in the kitchen and a little stripper pole fun. Oh la, this is a book to read while in the cold shower!!

The story here is mostly all about the couple, not much of an outside plotline. Not a complaint just an observation. Sometimes ya don't need extras, the romance is enough to carry you through.

The mixed narrative really helps you understand where each character is coming from. It is really easy to see the change in POV and never gets confusing.

The other great thing about this series is getting to catch up with old friends from the Wylde Bears series. This time we catch up with Ary and Charlie, they are so cute!!

I am loving this series and can not wait for more. Maverick, Liam and Melissa are all still single!!

Opposites attract

He's big, he's bad, and he's dirty, which is exactly opposite of what wolf shifter Candace Jace wants in a mate. Candace is borderline OCD and the victim of a cheating ex, she now has her life in a some sort of order and everything about bear shifter Trace Dakota off sets her carefully controlled world.

Owner of a bar, Trace had not expected to meet his mate at this point. A bad marriage and left Trace with strict rules when it came to women, one night stands and that is it. He knows his mate is Candace and even though it is difficult for his bear, he is taking his time to woo her as much as a Harley riding bad boy can.

Very fun read, I liked that they are polar opposites and Trace is pure alpha. You can easily understand Candace's reluctance as Trace is very vocal about his wants an needs. Look forward to more in this series.
