This approach is much needed in general, and particularly in music, where influences of diverse cultures are of such importance. Thank you for creating this book.

Excellent sense detail and interest in the writing. There are just enough details and facts on each artist to give an overall sense of who they were/are but not so much info that it blunts the impact of the major points or obscures larger concepts.

This text is very up-to-date; the discussion is carried to the present and music that students are likely to know or have heard about.

One of the better music books out there

So far this book as been a much better read than any of my other text books. It's not boring so reading the chapters is much more enjoyable. One thing that is neat is the fact that each concept or topic has a song to help to hear and understand what was said. Best part chapters as far sized so reading only take 30 minutes

Great insight into an amazing drum line

Awesome read and "look into" an era of a corps that is sometimes described as the "Dark Years." I never bought into that description and was happy to read about one of my favorite SCV shows. Granted, the corps didn't win many (any?) awards, but the drum line (obviously the focus of the story) that year turned out awesome and had that unmistakable Vanguard vibe. Reading about the journey is a must if you're anything more than a casual fan of DCI.

My only complaint (not the right word, really) is that it would've been nice to have some more dialogue, which I understand may have been hard to faithfully reconstruct given that the events took place as early as Fall 1992. Also, some insight into the design process for the drum music would've been interesting. Basically, more stuff to let us know that the members "made it", regardless of what the judges thought.

Bottom line, this is well-worth the money and is a great read. It has been well-edited so there's never that let-down of seeing missed punctuation, improper grammar, or misspelled words.

Sometimes miracles do happen.

But in this case, the miracle was a result of a group of people absolutely refusing to give up.
A close friend of mine marched in this drumline, and so I was able to gain a different perspective than most people who will read this story. I know that this was probably the most significant summer of his life. This is a wonderful story, and you don't have to be a drum corps member (or fan, for that matter) to enjoy it. This is not a story about drum corps, it's a story of how to live a dream.
This is a well-written story by a talented writer. Lee Rudnicki has a unique perspective on life and the entertainment industry, and knows how to tell a story. I can't wait to read his next work.

As someone who was participating in Drum & Bugle Corps in the early 1990s, I've always been curious what went on behind the scenes with 1993's Santa Clara Vanguard. As such, this proved a really interesting read.

One of the most original psychoanalysts after Freud, Karen Horney pioneered such now familiar concepts as alienation, self-realization, and the idealized image, and she brought to psychoanalysis a new understanding of the importance of culture and environment.

Karen Horney was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1885 and studied at the University of Berlin, receiving her medical degree in 1913. From 1914 to 1918 she studied psychiatry at Berlin-Lankwitz, Germany, and from 1918 to 1932 taught at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute. She participated in many international congresses, among them the historic discussion of lay analysis, chaired by Sigmund Freud.

Dr. Horney came to the United States in 1932 and for two years was Associate Director of the Psychoanalytic Institute, Chicago. In 1934 she came to New York and was a member of the teaching staff of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute until 1941, when she became one of the founders of the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis and the American Institute for Psychoanalysis.

In Neurosis and Human Growth, Dr. Horney discusses the neurotic process as a special form of the human development, the antithesis of healthy growth. She unfolds the different stages of this situation, describing neurotic claims, the tyranny or inner dictates and the neurotic's solutions for relieving the tensions of conflict in such emotional attitudes as domination, self-effacement, dependency, or resignation. Throughout, she outlines with penetrating insight the forces that work for and against the person's realization of his or her potentialities.

This 40th Anniversary Edition includes a new preface by Stephanie Steinfeld, Ph.D., and Jeffrey Rubin, M.D., of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis.

in school they did not talk about Karen as one of the top psychological thinkers but if you read this book you will find that she is amazingly intelligent and has a very analytical mind with great perceptions and Revelation in the area of overcoming mental illness

This book is, I believe, one of the most insightful investigations into human psychology ever written. I will write a few points on why I hold this to be the case:
1. The author does not locate the origins of psychological conflict in the sexual arena, but focuses intensely on self-esteem.
2. It focuses on disruptive trends that any given individual may have within themselves rather than making excessive use of modern labels: e.g. the focus is on the trend to self-deprecate rather than on having `personality-disorder X'. This allows the reader to examine themselves with a greater sense of flexibility rather than strait-jacket themselves too tightly with the diagnosis of a certain kind of illness.
3. This book is written well; the reader could read this book in a coffee shop and does not need a previous knowledge of psychoanalytic theory in order to gain something from this book.
4. This book is practical and theoretical at the same time. Horney goes deep enough into the structure of mental health problems in order to illuminate, but does not get bogged down in theoretical debate.
I therefore recommend this book to anyone interested in an improvement in mental health and general well-being; reading this book will be much more rewarding than staying on the surface level with popular self-help books.

“The work of British playwright, director, painter, and photographer Howard Barker (b. 1946) is not well known in the US, although this eclectic but richly rewarding volume makes apparent it should be. Indeed, Barker's drama and the loosely affiliated group dedicated to producing it since 1986, the Wrestling School, are arguably marginal even in their native Britain. For this one can blame both Barker’s eccentric, polyphonous, resistant, emphatically anti-naturalistic texts (which, as the editors are quick to assure the reader, are ‘different’ rather than difficult) and his uncompromising dedication to an alternative discipline of theater, which he has unfolded in a series of commentaries dedicated to the ‘theatre of catastrophe.’ Here, in an interview published as ‘On Discipline,’ Barker remarks: ‘My intense concern is that the experience of the play is not diluted by weak practices.’ The book comprises three complementary sections: ‘Howard Barker and the Wrestling School’ offers essays and interviews with Barker and some of the regular actors and directors associated with the Wrestling School over three decades; ‘Readings/Inversions’ provides scholarly considerations of Barker’s work in relation to ‘new writing,’ spirituality, and visuality; and ‘Other Barkers’ offers essays scanning particular productions and approaches. About the Author

James Reynolds is a Lecturer in Drama at Kingston University, London, UK. He has also taught at Queen Mary, University of London, and Rose Bruford College.

Dr Andy W. Smith is the Associate Head of the School of Media at the University of South Wales, UK. His doctoral thesis is a study of Howard Barker and his theatre company The Wrestling School. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters on the theatre of Howard Barker, post-war British drama, horror cinema and the Gothic in popular culture.

If the moves and methods of accomplishing magic with playing cards included a weapon of mass destruction, it would surely be the Memorized Stacked Deck. Knowing the identity and position of each of the 52 cards is a tool that can produce devastating impact on both the lay public and fellow magicians in the creation of truly unbelievable magic. The stacked deck of cards in a known order is not a new concept. References to the use of systematic setups date as far back as the late 1500s. There are a number of other stack systems including mathematical and mnemonic concepts, but it is Simon Aronson’s 1979 publication of his Stack to Remember with seven build in effects that is largely responsible for realization of the full potential of the memorized deck. Acknowledged as a leader in the use of this technique, Juan Tamariz published his master work Mnemoica (2004) which is the most comprehensive coverage of the subject. With such a long and multi-faceted history, why have so relatively few magicians availed themselves of this invaluable concept? The answer is fairly obvious - most magicians are convinced that the seemingly almost impossible task of committing an entire deck of cards to memory is either beyond their ability or simply not worth the effort. No doubt this mistaken belief makes the memorized deck cognoscenti quite happy that their secret weapon remains in the hands of a relatively few. However, as Simon Aronson says: “The only people who speak of the difficulties of memorizing a deck of cards, are those who’ve never seriously tried to learn one.” Geoff Williams strives to prove Mr. Aronson’s words in his Aronson Stack for Everybody manuscript.

While the history of memory systems goes back for centuries and there are many different versions and tweaks, the basic system recommended by Aronson and others is known as the Major Memory System or phonetic number system. It is a multi step process that starts with converting numbers to constant sounds, and then into words by adding vowels. The basic principle being that it is easier to remember images than numbers. These words are usually referred to as peg words and the peg system is a tool for remembering lists or indexing sequences by association of images with the peg words.

What Mr. Williams has done is to break this system down to a very simple basis and then apply his boundless imagination in using the peg words to construct vivid images that are almost impossible to forget. These images link each card in the Aronson stack to its stack number or position in the stacked deck. Geoff’s changes and tweaks are logical and follow his thought process as well as the way most of us think. The Williams approach is a streamlined, graphical approach which he refers to as his PMS system; a technique that actually makes memorizing a deck stack fun. Even if you have no intention of memorizing a stack, the profusely illustrated color manuscript is worth getting just to enjoy the fantastic images that have evolved from the truly unique mind of Geoff Williams for each card in the Aronson stack. For instance, how can one forget the image of an eel smoking a joint and the card and position with which it is associated? Using Geoff’s system, a 10 and 13 year old youth both learned the Aronson Stack in 90 minutes. The PMS technique, while designed with the Aronson stack in mind, can be used to memorize the Tamariz, Joyal, Nikola, and other stacks as well as lists and sequences of non card items. The 71 page booklet includes practice sheets for each phase of the process and links to other resources with multiple applications of the memorized stack as well as numerous helpful hints. While Geoff is careful to state there are no actual tricks in this booklet, The Aronson Stack for Everybody is a beautifully produced fun filled visual shortcut to achieving one of the most powerful tools in magic at a bargain price.

This is a great book (despite the snarky review in Genii). It gives you great visuals, helps you see the actual pictures that you need, and makes memorizing the Aronson stack much, much easier. If you would like to do mem deck work (and who wouldn't after reading the Worker's series or Aronson's work) this work will make your life a great deal easier. Geoff has worked hard on this manuscript and it is worth the money. Learning one trick using the stack will pay you back what you have spent, learning several will show you how valuable this book really is.

About the Author

Jamie Oliver started cooking at his parents' pub, The Cricketers, in Clavering, Essex, at the age of eight. After leaving school he began a career as a chef that took him to the River Caf�, where he was famously spotted by a television production company.

His television and publishing career began in 1999 with The Naked Chef series. Since then he has set up Fifteen restaurant in London, changed school dinners in the UK and revolutionized home cooking. His charity, The Jamie Oliver Foundation, seeks to improve people's lives through food.

Tasty and healthy super food recipes, a brilliant book

I am a big fan of Jamie Oliver and I was so pleased to hear the premise of this new book was around super foods and balanced eating; not low calorie foods but making nutritionally balanced meals that will still bring you in under your recommended calories for the day. Perfect.

I have posted a full recipe list at the end of this review for those wondering what kind of recipes are in the book.

I have to start this review with a summary in that I really do love this book, it’s a wonderful addition to my (growing) collection of Jamie’s books, plus I know that I should be eating a bit better and this book really has sincerely given me a fresh burst of inspiration… I made one of the best pasta dishes I’ve had in a long time from this book (Skinny Carbonara)... without cream.

Before actually trying it I wasn't sure if I would be ok with replacing the cream in my carbonara with natural yoghurt (and a few other changes), but honestly it was an absolute dream, the skinny carbonara tasted fresh and light and was still filling (thanks to the whole wheat pasta). You can tell these recipes are really well researched and thought through but it tasted so good too!

Unlike Jamie's other books I think this one may have a very slightly narrower appeal; all the recipes look very tasty indeed but there are some, my parents for example, who are very traditional shall we say, and wouldn't dream of blitzing up dates and mixing them with spices to make 'energy balls', or taking cream out of pasta dishes for that matter! But they do love all of Jamie's other books. Personally I love this book as it's about making tasty and balanced meals and it's packed full of beautiful pictures too.

The book is full of doable super food recipes, split by meal time and a really nice section at the back of the book with advice on ‘living well’.

I’ve uploaded a couple of images of my skinny carbonara and 'happiness pasta' that I have already made from this book (thanks to some pre-release recipes I had). In short if you are looking to eat a more balanced, nutritionally dense diet and want a book packed with doable recipes, with lots of images as well as calorie information, then this is one of the best out there in my opinion and I have a room literally stacked full of cook books.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS & PAGE LAYOUT

When I first got the book I absolutely loved how it felt and looked; in line with its theme the book has a very 'clean' and fresh layout, that's a little paired back.

Every recipe page has a photo (huge bonus for me) and also has the following information:

Ingredients in g
Method
Nutritional info per serving: calories, fat, sat fat, protein, carbs, sugar, fibre

SECTIONS

The book is split into 4 main recipe sections, split by meal time:

Breakfast (up to 400 calories)
Lunch (up to 600 calories)
Dinner (up to 600 calories)
Snacks and Drinks (varies)

I love this, I'm not a calorie counter (although my wife is), but this means I can do recipes from this book knowing I will be staying under my daily recommended calories (2500 for me, 2000 for my wife), with the option for additional snacks.

The last section of the book after the recipes is called ‘Live Well’, it has the following sub sections:

As you can probably tell from the section headers, the last 40 pages of the book are dedicated more to generic diet advice. For the book Jamie has taken advice from experts in the world of nutrition, health and sleep and put it into bite sized chunks of advice. It’s definitely worth checking out this section once you’ve got over the excitement of the recipes; although if I’m honest it was the recipes and trying them out that I was most excited about.

RECIPES ON TEST

I have tried three recipes so far and all have come out very well, and very different to any pasta dishes that I would typically make (I have uploaded a couple of images of my attempts).

It is nice to be able to make healthy meals where the ingredients are very easy to come by. Other ‘health’ books that I own require a specific trip a health foods store but not the case with these recipes.

I made Happiness Pasta and this was lovely, using ricotta and aubergines and with no meat it was very tasty indeed, and having the calorie information to hand is such a huge bonus. Small changes made this recipe healthier than how I would normally cook including steaming the aubergine with the chillies was absolutely beautiful, whereas normally I would griddle it with a good lug of oil.

Same with the skinny carbonara and differences, as I normally make a very ‘fat’ carbonara. This one contained fat free natural yoghurt in place of cream and I was sceptical but it was genuinely absolutely gorgeous. It was fresh, zingy, I would never have dreamt of doing a pasta dish like this with yoghurt and lemon, I did wonder if I was potentially going to end up wasting ingredients as I was making this and it all came together at the end as with all of Jamie's recipes over the years.

I also made the ‘Energy Balls’ which were basically medjool dates blitzed up with some lovely spices, and coated in blitzed pumpkin seeds, but these were devoured very quickly, which I take as a huge compliment, so whilst the basis of the recipes are healthy I think we have to work on our portion control.

SUMMARY

I have high expectations with Jamie’s books as I’ve found all his others to be the ones I reference most out of my entire collection, and this Everyday Super Food book is a wonderful addition to my shelf.

I feel like I've grown up cooking from all of Jamie's books, and this Super Food book is quite timely for me as I start to feel a little more like I should start to take care of my body and be conscious of what I eat as I approach my mid-thirties.

And true to form Jamie has given me inspirational recipes with unfussy and easy to find ingredients, I like that you don't have to take a special trip to the health foods store to do these recipes, Jamie has made them accessible and tasty. I really can't think of a more reliable cook book author. I love Jamie's other books and I'm over the moon with this one. Love it.

Delicious

This is my new favorite Jamie Oliver cookbook. I've only made the first three recipes (Baked Eggs in Popped Beans, Cherry Tomatoes, Ricotta on Toast; Granola Dust; and Magic Poached Eggs, Smashed Avo & Seeded Toast), but those three recipes were amazing. They were delicious, filling, and weren't nearly as time consuming to make as I thought they would be. Some of the recipes do require specialty ingredients, but they are easy enough to substitute. For example, instead of hazelnut milk for one of the recipes I'll be using almond milk, and I'll probably substitute brown rice for black rice. But it's not a big enough inconvenience to take away any stars. Can't wait to try the other recipes!

Just...meh

Five-year-old Paulie has just entered the foster system - and he's already considered nearly unplaceable.

When Casey Watson and her husband agree to take Paulie until an official placement can be found, she is initially disbelieving of all the warnings. How could this toddler-sized boy possibly be so out of control? Yet within minutes, she learns the truth firsthand.

Paulie has the mouth of the proverbial sailor and lashes out violently whenever he doesn't get his own way. Yet Casey is determined to find the spark of real Paulie under the unhappy exterior and help him.

Unfortunately Paulie only spent 5 days in the Watson household - and during that time Casey only learned a limited amount of information about his troubled homelife. That, no doubt, is why this work is only a novella versus the usual books. But having read all of Casey's books to date and having quite a frame of reference to her usual fostering experiences, this tends to fall a bit flat, largely due to the short span of time and missing info. The gist of Paulie's story is intriguing, but would really need to be fleshed out more to reach its full story potential.

Informative Essay

Although this is a "very short" introduction, this book is packed with information about children's literature. Even though I have to read it for school, I couldn't put it down, because it was quite interesting. I have to write an informative essay about children's literature for English class. Hopefully, I will get a good grade on it. I highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn more about children's literature, its history, and become knowledgable on the topic.
