About the Author
Emma Jane Hogbin makes Drupal easier through her books, videos, classes, and conference presentations. She has been teaching Internet technologies since 2002 and has been building Web sites since the 1990s. Hogbin has taught Drupal in France, Belgium, Hungary, Canada, New Zealand, England, and across the U.S. She has served as technical college instructor at Humber College and Seneca College and worked on curriculum development for the Ubuntu Linux distribution. Great book for beginners

Emma Jane continues to be a voice that resonates with new Drupal users as well as themers of all levels with her clear writing style and holistic approach to building Drupal sites. This book is well-written with chapters about less-geeky, but equally important aspects of web site development (site planning, information architecture, usability) that are often ignored in other Drupal books. When she does dive deeper into Drupal site building (most effectively with multiple case studies), her ability to focus on the important parts and not get bogged down in details (as is very easy to do with Drupal) is what makes this book a valuable resource for beginners.

If you're new to the community (and starting with Drupal 7), this should be the first book you purchase.

Comprehensive, but approachable!

I'll cut to the chase: "Drupal User's Guide" is a good book, and if you're trying to get your bearings in the often-confusing world of Drupal site building, you should buy it. Period.

I'm not necessarily the target audience: I've been a Drupal developer for almost six years now, and I tend to chew on more esoteric and nerdy problems than the ones this book tackles. I do a lot of training and education for clients and customers, though, and the approach that author Emma Jane Hobgin takes is fantastic for those who aren't already neck-deep in the world of Drupal (or a similar web CMS). She's an experienced author, teacher, and trainer who knows Drupal inside out, and it really shows.

The book often mixes technical information about Drupal-specific features with introductions to the "soft skills" needed to use them effectively. Drupal's FieldAPI, for example, isn't just about clicking and dragging. Using it effectively requires understanding how to break down something like "An article" or "An event" into discrete chunks of information, and Hobgin tackles that without getting tangled up in the technical weeds. Similarly, chapters on installing Drupal include useful overviews of the other stuff that's needed -- web hosting, domain registration, and information about how to cope with "custom installers" provided by soem web hosts. The chapters of the book that deal with planning your site's structure also touch on SEO and accessibility.

Many of those secondary topics have enough potential depth to justify their own books, but their inclusion works well. While that information can be safely skipped by old hands and experienced web developers, the result is a Drupal guide with valuable context, something that's often missing from purely technical books.

Hobgin also pays attention to the current trends in the world of third-party Drupal addons. The chapters that cover design and theming explain how to build custom Drupal templates, naturally, but the book also gives some space to point-and-click design tools like Sweaver. While some people will always want to roll their own designs from scratch, it's great to see all the options covered.

Must Have to Start Your Drupal Site

Drupal is not easy. It has a very steep learning curve. Building a website is more complex than most people think.

Hogbin spends the first third of the book instructing you on what goes into a great site. I never realized how vital that is to a person who has little experience in building real sites.

If you are building a Drupal site, then congratulations, you are on the road to being a serious developer.
From examples of types of sites, to getting into the role of the users of the site, this book cover it.

As a starting point, you cannot go wrong.

I highly recommend this book and I have added it to my list of books I give my clients.
In fact buy this book just for the planning chapters.

A good read.

The last two poems by an unlisted poet, Rebecca Baisden, (my wife), were my favorites of course. Everyone else did a good job. The entire book could have been formatted better. A table of contents would have been nice. A bibliography including a list of Authors should have been a must.
All in all it was a good read. Although some of the poems were vague in keeping with the theme. I enjoyed it. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys poetry.

Frank DeMarco was, and is, an author, a former journalist and an editor with the Hampton Roads Publishing Co., Inc., who had learned to bring forth messages from the other side.

The nonphysical end involved what DeMarco calls "the guys upstairs," a group whose composition changes from time to time, depending upon subject matter and other variables.

Together, in the summer of 2001, they began a series of weekly sessions in which DeMarco entered an altered state and Warren asked questions that had interested her for years, questions for which the volunteers she had quizzed had been unable to provide satisfactory answers. What is the nature and purpose of life? Is there a God? Is there an afterlife, and if so, what is it like? What is the truth behind crop circles, UFOs, etc.? In short, how does the world function?

As it turned out, the guys upstairs were more than willing to share what they know. Using a combination of explanation, analogy, pointed questions, jokes, thought experiments, etc., they set out to answer anything that could be asked. This fascinating series of conversations may help you change your life.

I really enjoyed this book!

I really enjoyed this book. This is primarily because I enjoyed the fun and light-heartedness of Frank DeMarco's guides (who he calls "TGU" or "the guys upstairs") as they carried on a very detailed and disclosing conversation about them, us, physical / non-physical reality, the afterlife and related topics. In working with my own non-physical guidance (who I began meeting in out of body experiences beginning in 2015), I have many times experienced the same light-heartedness and fun. So, the attraction to this book and its content was/is strong for me.

Rita Warren, a control booth facilitator at the Monroe Institute for several years in the 1980's and a friend of DeMarco, is the person asking his guides questions. About once a week in Rita's home and over several months, these sessions were originally conducted in 2001 to 2002. This presents an interesting "time gap", as the book was eventually published (2009) after the transition of Rita Warren (2008). Also, worth noting is that this book precedes the author's second book with TGU, The Cosmic Internet, which was published in 2012.

Individually, I read this book (Sphere & Hologram) in 2017 after reading Rita's World I and II last year (published in 2015 to 2016). So, sometimes I felt like I was going backwards (at times) as I was reading this book. This is because in Rita's World (where Rita has already transitioned), she and DeMarco update many of their perceptions from 2001 to 2002. This is why I personally consider the time gap an interesting element, as their are updates and expansions in the later books with Rita (after her transition) but sometimes the changes are due to Rita's (now) non-physical perspective. These things keep the reader on their toes.

Overall though, I have found this book (Sphere & Hologram) helpful for working with my own guidance. And ... if you are someone (like myself) who is focused upon working with your non-physical guides, then I can highly recommend this book to you. Frank DeMarco, as an author and non-physical communicator, is humble, straight forward and articulate. He writes all his books with an underlying message that "any of us can communicate with the non-physical aspects supporting us". And, in following his suggestions, I have found this to be true myself.

Thought-Provoking and Carefully Documented Channelled Material on the Nature of the Self

This book is the result of a collaboration between Frank DeMarco and the late Rita Warren, for many years a facilitator at the Monroe Institute after her retirement as an academic psychologist. She asked the questions, DeMarco channelled "The Gentlemen Upstairs" as he refers to his contact on the Other Side, and the sessions were recorded and transcribed. The material is on the nature of the self, primarily, with TGU attempting to explain the connection between our individual selves Here--as it seems to us--and a much more complex self/selves There. There is much to provoke thought and extended reflection in what's given.

My only reservation--as with the Seth material--is the repetitive nature of much of the content. Hard to avoid, as DeMarco chose, wisely I think, to present the material as received. But it does make for less gripping reading after a while, and, as with the Seth material, there seems less delivered than TGU intended. Sometimes it seems they got a bit sidetracked or distracted. Warren, too, asks less probing questions than I'd have like. She's caught up in each session, it seems to me, to the point that she loses her way a bit, and doesn't keep TGU on topic--or move them to a new one when they've pretty much exhausted the current one--as much as I'd have liked. But, overall, an interesting and worthwhile book.

With all due respect, for very open minded readers

I am enjoying reading this book from Franck De Marco. With all due respect for people who will read this review, this is not a book for everybody. I would advise potential readers to start with the books written by Bob Monroe to better understand the context of this one. For many, a conversation with Higher Beings will appear as either a fantasy or very real. If you think this is fantasy, you will probably drop this book quite quickly. Your initial beliefs system, personal values and understanding of your personal journey in this life will make a big difference in determining your potential openness to the concepts developed during the sessions that Franck and Rita have had with the Guys Upstairs. If you are not presently satisfied by the belief systems most prevalent right now in society, this book is for you. You will find fuel and inspiration to look at who you are in a very different way. Enjoy the reading !

Outstanding!

This book is extremely well produced. The combination of thoughtful examples, excellent real-world datasets, good exercise problems with hints to help you get started and guidance for using the most common software packages (including open-source R) make this a very thorough, self-contained introduction to linear regression. There is a strong emphasis on understanding, application and interpretation. The writing style is crystal clear. It is an ideal tool for independent learning - just follow along with the text using the datasets available from the website & your favorite statistical analysis software. This is the best elementary, practical introduction to linear regression that I have come across, well worth the investment!

excellent textbook

Applied Regression Modeling by Iain Pardoe is a very well written textbook about basic linear regression analysis. It is excellent for self study. The language is plain and simple. The approach is entertaining. And the math is easy to understand. You almost feel like you are in the classroom listening to a live lecture. The accompanying website is very informative. Especially the 5 min video clips and computer help are very useful. I recommend this book for anyone interested in learning the basics of regression. It is an excellent practical guide for those at beginner and intermediate level.

Gappy's Gadgets - A fun read!

I greatly enjoyed this book. It is a light hearted comedy set in the fantasy world of Ononokin. The main character, Gappy Whirligig, is a likeable industrious young Gnome who sets out to accomplish his life’s dream. There are also many other great characters in this story. This is light comedy fantasy and is not epic or high fantasy, it is more like Pratchett than Tolkien.

Gappy's Gadgets is pure laugh-out-loud fun!� The characters are unique and engaging.� The plot is fast-paced and entertaining.� And the comedy is hilarious.� I couldn't put it down -- I finished the book in one sitting.� (As a caution to other readers, I must warn you that if you stay up till 3:00am reading this book as I did, you may find yourself kicked out of the bedroom by a sleepy spouse who does not understand what could possibly be so funny in the middle of the night.� Rest assured, this book is worth annoying your spouse over -- it's that funny).�

I loved the way Logson and Young created such laughable, lovable, relatable characters -- even their villains.� I also loved the way they combined the absurd with the mundane to create humor.� These two talented writers definitely know how to delight readers.

I hope that Logson and Young plan to write more Ononokin books (4 is not enough!) because I will be eagerly waiting to read them.� I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I highly recommend it.

An enjoyable ride through a rather strange yet familiar world

Disclaimer: I was given a draft copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed it enough that I bought the released version just to see how things changed. I am a geek who likes those sorts of things.

This is a fun book and a joy to read. Great character development. Several laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of giggles. My only complaint is that I had a pretty good idea of what was going to happen early on in the book, and that kept away the tension I like to feel when a character I love is in danger. Of course (*spoiler alert*) the hero will win and the villain will lose, but I want to have just a few moments of doubt. That lowered my rating from 5 stars to 4.

Overall, the fantasy world is well developed, and there were many times where I was introduced to a new character and thought "I have met this person" even though the character might be an orc or a troll.

About the Author
Geneen Roth is a writer and a teacher who has gained international prominence through her work in the field of eating disorders. She is the founder of the Breaking Free workshops, which she has conducted nationwide since 1979. She is also the author of Feeding the Hungry Heart, Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating, and When Food is Love. A frequent guest on television and radio programs, she has written for and been featured in Tie, Ms., New Woman, Family Circle, and Cosmopolitan. Her poetry and short stories have been published in numerous anthologies. Born in New York City, she now lives in northern California.

I love Geneen Roth's approach to the compulsive Eating conundrum. She has insightful information and a positive approach to overcoming this devastating delima. I would recommend this book to anyone facing the heartache of compulsive eating.

I meet Geneen Roth back in the early 1980s and her books are insightful and enlightening. This book has one specific MUST READ PASSAGE .. It is called .. Days Alone Come Down To This .. I never tire of re-reading this passage of 4 pages. The ending of Days Alone Come Down To This is just PHENOMENAL .. It is a joy to recommend this book.
