My 10 year old is an avid reader and she absolutely loves chapter books - she recently discovered this series and finished this along with the first book. She really likes Alice-Miranda! For the holidays, Alice-Miranda brings her best friend, Jacinta, home to her family's estate, where the girls must deal with a cranky, mischievous boy, a visiting movie star, a snooping stranger, and a secretive grandmother.

This is an accelerated reader (AR) book. My kids have to read books and take AR test as a part of their reading grade so I'm always on the look out for a good AR book. AR RL: 4.7 - AR Pts: 7.0

Better than Big Katz for Med Students

For medical students, this book is significantly better than its counterpart, "Big Katzung." This version is more succinct and focuses on the clinically important concepts and drugs. The review questions are also great for assessing knowledge. There are occasionally subjects covered in "Big" Katzung that don't translate to the small version, so keep that in mind, but generally these are low yield. Overall, a better purchase than the big version for most pharmacology needs.

Good pharm review book. For this class of book, I'd say its an even match with Lippincotts illustrated Review

It's a review book, so the depth may not be that great for let's say a pharm student, but I am in medical school, so I do not know their curriculum. As for medical school, this book is great. My only criticism is the tables in the back of every chapter could be laid out better as far as dividing between drugs of the same class. But again, I don't know any other book right know that has everything this book has in this format..maybe lippincotts...but again, for a review book, this book is better than those mini review books, but obvioulsy less in depth than the 1k+ page full Katzung book.

Good questions, but review is not quite as comrehensive as compared to LIR Pharmacology. If you don't have the time for Katzung's Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, LIR is a better bet. I wish that they had simply added the questions to the Basic and Clinical Pharmacology so I wouldn't have to buy this book for them and put out slightly more comprehensive review version with the same questions for those that are time-strapped.

Dark and Lyrical

I have to say that I do love Mr Shepherd’s writing – it has a dark, atmospheric brooding quality to it that I have not found elsewhere and it never fails to leave me affected, usually jumping at shadows for a while. This, like his previous novels, is part of an ongoing mythology involving Constable Charles Horton, but all are standalone novels in their own right so you can pick up any of them and have a terrific reading experience.

In this story, our hero is drawn into a world of suspected magic and mayhem, as he investigates a house in the country where rumours of witchcraft abound – whilst back in London, a series of baffling murders is taking place. The answers may well lie within an insane asylum where Horton’s wife currently resides, battling her inner demons.

This is an excellent multi stranded story – definitely my favourite so far – it is creepy, unsettling and often horrifying whilst at the same time being strangely fascinating. I was enthralled by the thread of the tale that dealt with the treatment of mental illness, especially as the author has pulled off a difficult feat here by managing to mix the scientific with the mysterious yet still making it all seem perfectly possible. Very intriguing indeed.

I love the characters, was very fond of Abigail Horton especially and the story ebbs and flows between practical and magic with a deft hand that will have you changing your mind page by page as to what exactly is going on. Some extremely intelligent plotting and a lovely lilt to the flow of the prose will keep you immersed in the tale and overall this really is a most enthralling read.

If you like a novel that makes you look at the world around you in a different way for a while then this is definitely for you.

The continued story of Charles Horton, his wife, Abigail, and his semi-enemy, Mr. Graham. Abigail is in dire straits thus fleeing to a madhouse where she sees some very disturbing things. Charles is sent, by Mr. Graham, to Thorpe to determine if witchcraft is being used on his wife and his daughter who are living with a cousin (in sin). Mr. Graham is investigating some horrid murders of Gentlemen. All of these people and the places and things they are seeing are all intertwined. The picture of Wapping, Lower Gun Alley, London, and the village of Thorpe in the early 1800's are all painted clearly as is the lot of women who are without the safety of either a husband or a father.
