Born in 1968, during a turbulent time of the Viet Nam War, Sister Dang Nghiem graduated from a prestigious medical school and was a practicing doctor at UCSF medical hospital. She is a nun in the community of Thich Nhat Hanh and currently resides at Deer Park monastery near San Diego, CA.

A beautiful story beautifully told

A beautiful story beautifully told. Sister D helps me understand monasticism in the heart, a subject I have much contemplated. She helps me see Vietnam, and tragedy in general, from a personal perspective, actually from many perspectives. The book is full of love and prompts one to love much.

A Cultural Coming of Age Story

Sister Dang Nghiem's story is one I would not expect to be written by a nun. That it came from the same community I practice with and that I know her personally was an added joy. The story itself builds from the foundation of her early childhood experiences with sexual abuse and war in Vietnam, family dysfunction, and later experiences with a partner when she moved to the US. Somewhat disjointed character development and story plot made it difficult to follow at the start. The latter half was written with greater bravado, and focused on her work as a doctor into her move to ordain as a nun. To see a monastic practitioner write about their challenges with the practice inside the monastery, and how they overcome them, aroused a confidence for my own chosen path within the tradition. It made a nun, who I look up to, into a human being--her guidance as a teacher all the more accessible to ordinary people like myself. Extraordinary about Healing that some may overlook, is its portrayal of Vietnamese-American life. It is a story of social-cultural and historical importance. Born to an American soldier and a Vietnamese-born mom, Sister Dang's story is a record of life in our current times. It is a cultural coming of age story that proves quintessential in the presence of Dharma in the West, and in healing the wounds of war within our country and abroad.

This short memoir traces a path from delusion to engaged Buddhism, wrinkles and all. A tribute to the solidity of Sister Dang Nghiem's faith in her practice, as well as to her teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh. Sweet without pity; truth without bitterness. An inspiring read.

Should be Read by every Criminal Justice student in the United States!

WOW! This book is a wealth of information about the prison system in the United States and should be used in every classroom in America by those pursuing a criminal justice career of any kind. Tim Anderson doesn't give random facts about the system but is able to provide a much larger view of how this information goes hand-in-hand with other well-established factual data that may seem unrelated on the surface, but isn't. The connections are there, brilliantly put together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle by Anderson. Best of all, this isn't just a book based on the author's feelings and thoughts, every scrap of information is referenced by relative and current documentation. Yet, it is an easy book to read and comprehend. It actually was a fast read but pertinent information stays with you throughout. Highly recommend.

A step up

We were using the first edition of this book and what a welcome change this one is. We haven't been using it long but we have managed to find a category for every item we have accessioned to date unlike the older one that was too general in many cases.

No nonsense NOMENCLATURE.

The book is everything the museum wanted to help us inventory and record the many items we have. The book begins by telling you what to look for and how to use it in easy to understand language. The helps are illustrated with examples. The majority of the book is the tool. Only a small proportion is introductory.

I would recommend this to anyone.

Incomplete Complete Bengali

This is a very carefully worded, comprehensive $20 paperback guide to learning Bengali that makes numerous references to two audio CDs that are not included. The same book + CDs costs $500-$1000. Madness. I am still finding the book to be a source of knowledge, but without the audio to perfect pronunciation it is useless knowledge. It is missing necessary components. The support CDs by themselves cost another $40 and up. Why is the combo so expensive?

Get it while you can. This 5th Edition is most likely the last of the classic series. It's a superb collection of low band information. BK

The true bible of Low Band Dxing, especially antennas

The latest volume/update has much more information, a wonderful guide to Low Bad Dxing, plus a CD with lots of antenna calculations and tables. A must have book for the Low Band enthusiast even if you have previous Low Band DXing books.
