Great for students!

My students love this book!. They like reading biographies, and it was not too challenging for them to read. It is a great resource for studying Mary McLeod Bethune. It gave my students an incite on her life and her accomplihsments. Also, the price was very reasonable. I have definitely recommended this book to my colleagues.

Clever stage sets, like Haussmann's parks, Chapultepec in Mexico City, and New York's Central Park, where reception had as much impact as did its design, transformed the configuration of these Melodramatic Landscapes. Obscured by habit and imitation, we need to find renewal in public parks--historical, no less contemporary--for the staging of various competing publics. A coda, with its appealing examination of Christo's Gates in 2005 Central Park, makes a final plea for neglecting landscape's 'natural phenomenon' in face of its origins and motives in the midst of modern cities.

A Dramatic Social History of Three Great Urban Parks

Because they have become so familiar to us, it is easy to forget that public parks are staged creations. Professor Schenker's analysis of three great parks in Paris, Mexico City, and New York, informs through a rich range of historical sources not only the shape of their staging but also the accompanying cultural transformation of the entire cast of characters. Schenker's melodramatic parallels deeply enrich the social world that attended this stylization of the country that was planted in nineteenth-century cities. It's a pleasure to read.

Heath Massey Schenker, a scholar of astonishing erudition, is here to fix that: she tells the story of urban park design, as it evolved in Europe and culminated in the Americas, against the roiling backdrop of Progressive-era social change. The discourse of landscape architecture gets refreshed in the process, as Professor Schenker infuses her analysis with the ideas of thinkers like Peter Brooks, Jurgen Habermas, and Fredric Jameson. Bonus for New Yorkers: the chapter on Central Park is alone worth the price of admission. Olmsted's masterpiece emerged from a drama so engrossing--and, here, so expertly told--that you'll forget you're learning something.

A Fascinating Account of the Development of City Parks

I was intrigued by Melodramatic Landscapes. I am a lover of city parks, but I had no idea of the complex social, cultural and political forces behind the creation of these wonderful public parks in the nineteenth century. That is, until I read this book. It tells this story by focusing on the creation of three major city parks: Buttes Chaumont in Paris, Chapultepec Park in Mexico City, and Central Park in NYC. And it uses rich historical detail and a variety of original materials, from newspaper articles and first-person accounts to plans and drawings, to bring this history to life. It is a fascinating book.

Funny, enjoyable for everyone under 99

My son and I keep reading about Hiccup's adventures since the first book was out. We enjoyed them all. Funny language, wonderful illustrations, light humour. I recommended them to other parents, who complained about reluctant readers. My son enjoys reading all kind of books, but he always asks for something with real humour "for dessert". Enjoy!

I have five children, the oldest two being 11 and 9 year old boys that LOVE to read. This series is a big hit with both of them and I will be saving them for their younger brothers to read when they are old enough.

Great book for anyone taking college anatomy and Physiology

My study group and I used this book for our college anatomy and physiology classes. We found that the text was quite easy to comprehend and the pictures of muscles was very clear and precise. We also used the following 3 books when we were preparing for our midterm and final exams.

Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: (Volume 1 and Volume 2) are outstanding study guides. It showed us the kind of questions to prepare for when we took our exams. We saw many of the type of questions asked on our exams from studying these study guides. Also, Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology focused on the key ideas asked on the exams. I guess this is why me and my study group all got over 90 averages in our classes. This was our exact study plan. First, read important stuff in Tortora's textbook to get a really good understanding of A and P. For the test, we prepared heavy by studying the last 3 books described and using Tortora's book as a reference.

book is thorough and explains all aspects there. it contains a glossary and new terminology is explained after every part of body and system exploration.
the attached atlas - shows all parts of the skeleton. it is handy - you can drag it with you anywhere while studying for exams. atlas has also references to book. shame it has only the skeleton and all body systems.
the book has two cd-roms attached - one in fron cover - let's you prepare sample exams in order to prepare you to passing the exams.
the other cd-rom - is the foundations - first cd in a series of some. book contains only the first - the foundations part. it has animation, pivtures and interactive explanations and also a glossary part. so you can postpon buying a dictionary for the beginning until you have some knowledge and know what dictionary will be best for you.
all in all - excelent package for an affordable price.

Excellent Anatomy and Physio text

For a new student of anatomy and physiology, this text is incredible. It's got a wealth of material, is easy to use and understand (without being simplistic), and does an excellent job integrating the principles of physiology in with the basic anatomy. It even has some small clinical asides that are both interesting and relevant. I used this book for all of my undergrad work, and have kept it as a valuable reference for my med school anatomy. I also picked up and use a copy of Moore's "Clinically Oriented Anatomy", which is also excellent, yet much more advanced/detailed....for a quick reference I find that I always check Tortora/Grabowski first, and go to a deeper text only if what I need isn't covered in sufficient depth, which rarely happens. This is an outstanding textbook for A&P.

Plenty of Food for Thought

Just about all modern maladies are tied to inflammation. Michelle Babb has created a wonderful little cookbook with the usual gorgeous photos of food but these dishes are based on wholesome ingredients, not food porn. Get away from comfort food based on nostalgia and focus instead on foods correlated with reducing depression and fatigue.

Although I have been vaguely familiar with the American diet as a source of inflation, the gut brain connection and the many benefits of a healthy diet, Babb brings these concepts home in a non-preachy cookbook. Instead of mind-altering drugs that can be a little to powerful and harsh, maybe its time to try mind-altering foods.

I'd like to see expanded tables describing the mind-altering components many more food -- missing here are some of my favorites like blueberries, wild rice and persimmons, but I guess that would be a different book.

Plenty of food for thought.

Misses the mark

I am a big fan of Michelle Babb's first cookbook. You really can't go wrong with any of her recipes. But this cookbook seemed to lose the balance between taste and nutrition that her first one held so well. Many of these recipes are bland or downright disgusting (breakfast scramble, for example). I will keep exploring it, but definitely hope that she's able to return to the magic of the first book.
