About the Author

Mark R. Leary, Ph. D., Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University, received his B.A. from West Virginia Wesleyan College (1976) and his doctorate from the University of Florida (1980). He taught at Denison University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Wake Forest University before moving to Duke.� Dr. Leary’s research and writing focus on social motivation and emotion, areas in which he has published more than 150 scholarly articles and chapters.� Dr. Leary is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Association for Psychological Science, as well as a member of the International Association for Relationship Research and the International Society for Self and Identity.� Dr. Leary was the founding editor of Self and Identity, a new scholarly journal, and served for nine years as Associate Editor of the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology.� He has also served on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Personality, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Personality and Social Psychology Review, and Emotion.

Good, but Flawed (6th edition)

Mark Leary's INTRODUCTION TO BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH METHODS (6th Edition) is a great reference but only a good textbook.

As far as textbooks go, this text is plain. The author does a good job relating examples to students, but only a so-so job at engaging them. Most of my students seemed to enjoy the text in terms of reference; everything is ordered and explained nicely enough that they can flip back and find exactly what they are looking for. Any students interested in pursuing a position in the field of behavioral research would probably do good to hold onto their copy of the book -- it will probably come in handy in the future. It's just not a fun read. The contents are in black, white, and grayscale -- surprising for how much this textbook costs!

This new 6th edition only has minor improvements over the 5th edition: Introduction to Behavioral Research Methods 5TH EDITION. Many of the chapters are nearly identical. Most notably, the examples of scientific writing have been updated to reflect the newest version of APA formatting. Do yourself (and your students) a favor and go with the cheaper version of this text!

There has to be better

Although the text book gave helpful informtion it did so in a boring manner. There is almost no change in font size - even for headings or sepration between sections and absolutly no color or pictures. There i no reason a textbook this simple can not be offered as an ebook!

The writing was even dryer than the formating. Most students in my class stoped reading it very eary in the class and those like me have great difficulty focusing on what they are trying to say.

Even my professior deviates a lot from the book. I have never read chapters so mixed up, and that is saying something.

Simply the best

Don't listen to people who claim that this book is boring - this book is brilliant, and as entertaining as this topic can possibly be made to be. There are comics and cartoons all over the place (not just randomly, but ones that are actually appropriate to the topics being written about), incredibly interesting studies are used as examples and references throughout the text, and if you are even the least bit interested in research methods then you will find this book to be straightforward, logical, and informative. Three things that VERY few psychology textbooks are. Having read this I actually had a better grasp of the content, not just a larger vocabulary of terms I didn't understand but that I could vomit out at people to shut them up and make myself look smart. I actually LEARNED having read this, and actually LEARNED the terms discussed, and am GRATEFUL to the author for having taken the time to create a textbook that is actually educational. My only beef with it is how much it costs, but I can hardly fault the book for that.

PreS-Gr 2—The shadows of a summer night sing the promise of morning to a boy and his cat as they venture out into the dark yard surrounding their house. In the introductory scene just before the title page, the redheaded boy, tucked in bed in his darkened room, addresses the black cat curled above him, gazing through the window at the dusky world. "Good-night, Sylvie." Sylvie, it soon appears, is not ready for sleep and meows insistently until the two tiptoe through the sleeping house and out into the nighttime shadows. Gerstein's roughly sketched scenes with well-chosen detail are done on gray art paper, a fine choice for these shadowy night views. The early indoor scenes are boxed against the outer page. Heading for the open door, Sylvie hints, "It's coming…hurry." The dark outside opens fully on a spread and is soft and comfortable with shadows everywhere. "Are those shadows roses? Are those lilies and sunflowers? Where are their colors?" Soon the shadows reveal a great variety of animals that begin to echo Sylvie's hint. "It's on its way…here it comes…It's almost here." Eventually a glow appears above the trees, the shadowy animals slip away, and the world gathers color, leading to a full burst of sun. Boy and cat rush into the house to announce the beautiful day. Gerstein adds a personal note about his early childhood discomfort with the outer night world and his lifelong love of sunrise. Children will surely respond to his simple scheme, beautifully crafted with spare text and with much to enjoy in the homely views of house and yard. About the Author
Mordicai Gerstein is the acclaimed author and illustrator of more than forty books, many of which he also wrote. His books are frequently awarded ALA Notable status, and he is the three-time recipient of a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year honor. In 2004, Mordicai was awarded the Caldecott Medal for The Man Who Walked Between the Towers. Mordicai lives in western Massachusetts.

Not really attention-grabbing

I picked up this book to read to a four-year-old I was babysitting, and I can't say it was a huge hit. There isn't much story here, a boy is woken near dawn by his cat, and they go outside in the dark and watch the sunrise, and it's pretty. That leaves the pictures. I understand that Mordicai Gerstein is a Caldecott winner, so obviously my opinion will be in the minority, but I didn't find the artwork all that impressive. It's a bit retro-late 50s/early 60s style, reminds me a bit of picture books I owned as a kid. Perhaps the smudgy, blurry-edged style is supposed to be impressionism? There wasn't much to talk about in the 20 pages of charcoal-gray illustration, my young reader found it "all the same" until the sunrise, and then "scribbly". I'm including some pics, I hope it's allowed.

The Magic of the Night

For anyone who has ever explored the late night, early dawn - this book is for you (and your children)! The illustrations are amazing. Even in the beginning, when everything is dark greys and blacks you get absorbed into the pictures. The story is good, but I found myself only reading the text as an afterthought. This is a perfect book for children - it's a book where you don't need words, the illustrations are enough.

About the Author
Mark Beck began his massage career in 1974 after completing a massage apprenticeship under the guidance of Bob Rogers. He completed a program to become a holistic practitioner in 1979 and has taken hundreds of hours of continuing education classes. Mark owned and directed two massage schools and remains active in state and national professional massage organizations. Most recently he was an inaugural board member of the Alliance for Massage Therapy Educators (2010-2014). He holds a bachelor's degree in vocational education with an emphasis in massage therapy from the University of Idaho. Mark developed the Structural Muscular Balancing Seminars and is coauthor of the Structural Muscular Balancing Manual. Because of a spinal cord injury in 1990, Mark retired from the practice of massage therapy but continues to be an advocate for excellence in massage education.

Disappointing

This workbook is written to accompany Beck's Theory and Practice of Therapeutic Massage. However, there are places where the definitions to the vocabulary are missing in the book, where questions or labeling are answered in a future chapter, and where the questions are worded so differently from the book it takes outside research to answer them. Most workbook chapters have at least one of these mistakes and many have several of them making the workbook not only difficult, but confusing. Our teachers have even had a hard time helping us find answers in the book. At times, even the answers that they have from the teacher's guide are clearly wrong or at best confusing. I understand that workbooks are meant to make you think and really get a grasp on the material, but I believe that this should be accomplished without leaving the student confused.
