About the Author
Dr. Herbert Lockyer was born in London in 1886, and held pastorates in Scotland and England for 25 years before coming to the United States in 1935. In 1937 he received the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Northwestern Evangelical Seminary. In 1955 he returned to England where he lived for many years. He then returned to the United States where he continued to devote time to the writing ministry until his death in November of 1984.

Comprehensive, but organization could be better

To be fair, this is an excellent compendium of all the promises of the bible. However, it suffers from a somewhat encyclopedic approach, that is, it is chock-full of information but not eminently readable. As a reference book, it suffers from the lack of a useful index. That leaves the only other alternative, which is to endeavour to read it cover to cover. The latter is not such a ridiculous thought; after all, the promises of God are so exciting that they should be fully devoured. Unfortunately, again, Lockyear's presentation of the material makes this a difficult task. It is a pity, because I am sure there are many, many gems to be found. The accompanying commentary is also sometimes very insightful. Alas, after this, I am still searching for a book that classifies all the promises in the Bible - all 8,810 of them - in a simple manner!

Suzuki Boredom Buster

Volumes 1-3 are easy enough for a beginner and yet fun enough for an intermediate player. Would probably be boring however for someone more advanced. Lovely songs. I got these to help with the boredom of the Suzuki series. And as an in between set before starting the 4th Suzuki book. I like how books 1 and 2 are in 1st position, while book 3 works on the 3rd position. A perfect transition that I need for the 4th suzuki book!

Political Schizophrenia

Though it may have an ancient tradition, political schizophrenia where attack and the deploy of missiles aimed at political targets for intimidation and control is a sad use of these tactics to achieve political aims. Campaign finance reform and freedom of expression never had it so bad, and unbridled strongarm methods never had it so good. Both of which reduce the probability and the statistical possibility that individuals will exercise either their right to vote, to run, or even to participate in the political process as it was envisioned to operate. Once burned is usually enough! Rather like being run over by a train or allowing the heart to be carved out without anesthesia but remaining alive. The animosity of the political parties, and the factions within political parties intentionally or inadvertently place far too many individuals in the unfortunate position of having to opt out of political expression as a high risk activity. Voting records reflect that sad reality. Whether there are antidotes to such an abuse of power is unknown, and few have incentive to seek one, since the methods have long known to work, and work well, which is why they have been increasingly brutal in recent years. Drowning out American citizens seems to be the plan by which those who would be more powerful become so, and those who already are remain unchallenged. For the average citizen, once around this block is usually enough. Patriotism, in need is sadly not patriotism indeed. When respect is replaced by rhetoric, negligence and disregard, the entire country suffers.......and each individual becomes a man (or woman) without a country, even without moving.

In this 287-page hardback book, wargames terrain modeler Paul Davies, author of numerous magazine articles on the subject, takes the reader through the process of creating a visually appealing yet practical terrain over which miniature battles may be fought. The techniques involved in the making of a basic landscape are explained, such as terrain cloths and tiles, custom or sculpted terrain, and this is followed by a series of projects showing how this can be adapted to suit different periods and/or geographic locations. There are then numerous sections on adding rivers and ponds, islands cliffs and hills, trees, walls, fences and screens, hedges, gates, cultivated fields, roads, bridges, defenses and buildings. All these projects have step-by-step instructions and are illustrated with over 400 specially taken color photos, taking the reader through the various stages of construction to the finished model. There is no doubt that this is a practical and useful guide, both to the specific items which are featured, but also in general construction terms. A good source of ideas

If you're interested in making wargaming or diorama terrain then this book is worth a look. Some things I knew and some method I've been using for years, but there were other elements that I hadn't heard of or even considered before and I'm certain I will use some of them in the future.

Great for preteen children, but...

Its great for what it and great for preteen children is but to be honest, I didn't get anything really out of it at all, If you are prepared to do the work there is more realistic terrain guides on Youtube for free. To be fair it depends on how good you want your terrain to be.

Having said that its perfect for my 11 year old son.

Maria Grosz-Ngat� is an anthropologist and Associate Director of the African Studies Program at Indiana University. She has conducted long-term research in Mali and Senegal with a focus on rural social transformations, gender, and Islam.

John H. Hanson is Associate Professor of History at Indiana University and an editor of History in Africa. His research concerns the history of West Africa Muslim communities during the past 200 years.

Patrick O’Meara is Special Advisor to the Indiana University President, Vice President Emeritus and Professor of Public and Environmental Affairs and Political Science. He was the editor (with Phyllis Martin) of all of the previous editions of Africa. His interests include South African politics and international development.

The Manhattanites are such a fantastic group of friends that you just can't help but ...

I have been waiting and waiting for Blake's book and I'm so excited it finally arrived!!! The Manhattanites are such a fantastic group of friends that you just can't help but fall into their lives and never want to leave! Blake is such a quiet character through the other books. He's their solid backbone and you never get the feeling that his life isn't all that he wants. We get to see into his real relationship with Diego and what an eye opener!!! Blake just really broke my heart, I wanted to reach out and hug him and tell him everything would be ok, or at least mix him a good strong drink and take him out on the town. The love story between Blake and Miguel is years in the making so it's no surprise that there are HUGE fireworks when they get together. The intensity with which they come together was mind blowing and awe inspiring. The other aspect of the book that stands out to me is the incredible acceptance of all of the characters, flaws and all. I love that in each book we get a little update on what's going on with the others without losing focus on the main characters in the current story. I don't know what's up for this group but I can tell you, it's going to be hot, exciting and more sparkly than the biggest diamonds and I can't wait!

I have loved the Manhattanite series from the start and so wanted to hear Blake’s story but this was beyond my expectations. I did not expect such sad angst. Such passion in Miguel, to see Blake so down and feeling undesirable.

Blake is sometimes arrogant but in this book, he began as broken and hiding secrets. He was afraid as well. His ex did a number on him and he feared so much. His self esteem was down and so was his confidence.

Miguel is a passionate, sweet guy who is in love with Blake. When Blake gets divorced hope blooms in his eyes. He never sees Blake as broken or undesirable. He sees Blake as the man he fell in love with in college. The man that is kind and loyal to his friends. Who has passion and compassion for others. He also doesn’t know what happened to Blake during his marriage but he wants to fix it for sure.

These two come together because of a list. A list Blake puts together about what his secret desires are and Miguel is the man to help. All saw Miguel as the manwhore a dominate manwhore but he is more. He did this to mask his pain over not being with the man he loves-Blake. So with the list, he is going to show Blake what he is missing and make him his. Blake moves into Miguel’s apartment and the snob in Blake comes out. This goes quickly as he spends more time with Miguel and in Miguel’s world and rules. He also gets more passion and caring than he has in a long time from a partner. Blake’s afraid though due to his horrible horrible ex and he has a terrible secret that he fears will turn Miguel away.

The time in Miguel’s apartment is fun, exciting and passionate. The intimacy is explosive and even sweet at times. The dog cracks me up and so does some of the moments like blake cooking, doing laundry and the washing of the dog is a hoot. Blake begins to trust Blake but is so scared of being rejected he does something stupid.

Danger comes into Blake’s life and it is Miguel who comes to his rescue and gets him to tell him the truth. Miguel shows Blake what love is, real love. Love that doesn’t judge or is conditional. HE shows him compassion, kindness, patience and intimacy that steams up the kindle.

This is the fun sweet and at times erotic story of Miguel and Blake. How Blake begins to forgive himself for his ex and begins to feel that he is worthy of love. How Miguel helps Blake become whole again. And how they find love and happiness with each other. I was so glad to see Blake and Miguel get a story and come together. They deserve happiness with each other and this well written book keeps you engaged in their banter, danger and love.

I don't usually read m/m genre books but I've loved the books in this series so far so I went for it and had no regrets at all. Blake Morgan III is a hot sexy guy that is just coming out of a divorce and is disillusioned about love. So he decides that he is going to remain single. He makes a fantasy list of things he wants to do but realizes that the only person he wants to do them with is his best friend Miguel. Miguel has wanted Blake from the moment he saw him but hesitated and lost his chance so he became his friend never thinking he would ever get his chance again.

Some friends send Blake's list to Miguel and when he sees it he knows this might his last chance with Blake. He makes a condition with Blake and then they both embark on a journey of discovery. Blake isn't looking for anything serious with Miguel and thinks that Miguel is of like mind. But as they delve into each other's hidden fantasies things change and they grow closer. Miguel want to prove to Blake's that he can make a commitment to him. Both of them face many struggles in their relationship that only makes them stronger for it.

I loved this book it was funny fast paced and had such amazing characters you don't want it to end. I would recommend this to any book lover out there. Even if you've never read a book of the m/m genre you'll love it.

Well-researched novel will appeal to rabid NBA stats fans

Andy Glockner's book is a "behind the scenes look at the high stakes game of creating an NBA champion." It delves into the fairly recent evolution of statistics (big data analytics) and its impact on professional basketball. How is the NBA-- a league of big money and big outcomes -- using this potentially massive amount of data to its advantage? Is it the players, the coaches, the teams, the front offices looking to benefit? How can big data and statistics fit into the traditional paradigm of the NBA as we know it?

I nabbed an advanced copy of this book, because I'm a sports fan and a big NBA fan. I thought the book was going to take a look at the 2014/2015 season and how stats impacted it, but I don't feel that it exactly delivered on its promise. That's not to say it's not a good read. It's certainly enjoyable if you like basketball, particularly the NBA. If you're a fan of statistics and numbers related to your sports, you'll love the book, as it's chock full of data. In fact, so much that it reads like a term paper sometimes. My biggest issue, in fact, was that is was almost a little too dry and statistics heavy, with an outline that jumped around in organization, making it hard to follow and stay engaged. Still, the book is extremely well-researched and you'll pick up a lot of good tidbits to impress fellow sports fans.

Overall, it was amazing to read about the impact of statistics on the NBA and how what would take the video and tape guys hours (probably days ages ago) can now be compiled in seconds by companies with algorithms and computer programs. Glockner introduces to us to several of these firms, including SportsVU, and does a good job explaining their evolution. (Perhaps too good a job - it gets to be a bit much at times.)

Some of my other issues were that, at least in my ebook edition, some of the graphics were hard to read, as all the lines and charts were hard to read - the lines were basically all the same color.

To me, the book was best when Glockner mixed his use of stats with anecdotes and real stories. I'm not exactly sure billing it as a quest to find the most "perfected player" is true, or even a look at the 2014/2015 season, but the stories were fun. There's a short bit on University of Kentucky Coach Calipari's hire of Joel Justus in the analytics realm and how that led to UK's much talked about platoon system for one season - quite a fascinating portion of a chapter. Further, the Colorado State basketball program is a good anecdotal example use of SportsVU and is far less dry than the more stats heavy or less conversational chapters.

Again, the book also gets you thinking: just like any other advantage in sports, stats often help those programs with more money; for instance, the Duke Blue Devils being the only team able to use the SportsVU system in their practice facility (this stuck in my craw, being anti-Duke and all. Go 'Hoos!) It also talks about how young players are showing worse movement than ever (very scary). And, a lot of the book is mind boggling with its repercussions; for instance, a company at the combine is predicting player injuries before these kids are even in the NBA (leading to great questions about who gets that data, what do they do with it, what does it mean for the kids or the teams scouting them, etc.)

Glockner goes into the biomechanics pieces of stats, with some fun and fascinating bits weaved in. He discusses how the company P3 can tell how a player is "off" in his mechanics, for instance, with their amazing system of measurements. This leads to a great Phoenix Suns and Grant Hill anecdote and the resurrection of Grant's career (again, book had more pull to me when it was aligned with an actual team or player that made it seem more real).

The epilogue is what I thought the whole book was about (Golden State using stats to win), but was actually very brief (basically one bit about an assistant who subbed in someone). It's amazing story about how stats can alter an entire NBA finals, but goes out with a whimper.

Overall, it was a good book, but I confess I probably bumped my rating up to a 3-star simply due to my love of basketball. Some of the chapters just seem hodgepodge - as if a bunch of players were just thrown in to talk about stats with no rhyme or reason; it's interesting, but seems random and nonsensical. Are these the most perfected players we were promised? If so, it's not really made clear. The Kyle Korver story near the end of the book finally ties a lot of the book's themes together (analytics, P3, etc.) in a story form, which was interesting and compelling in its format and how I wish more of the book had been presented. Combine that with a little too many numbers for a casual sports fan and the jumping around in organization and there was definitely something lacking. Still, this well-researched novel will appeal to the rabid stats fans and those who want more history about how the burgeoning field of big data analytics is changing the NBA as we speak.

Awesome book

This book does an excellent job of illustrating the countless layers of analytics within the basketball world. Analytics influence the on-court product, but also prevent injuries and inform business decisions. Glockner's prose is always a pleasure to read.
