Anthroposophy (A Fragment): A New Foundation for the Study of Human Nature (CW 45) (Classics in Anthroposophy), by Rudolf Steiner

This written attempt to create a spiritual anthropology was found among Rudolf Steiner’s unpublished works after his death.

Although fragmentary, this key work on "Anthroposophy" is of enormous interest and importance. It is work whose time has finally arrived. Here are the first steps toward the development of a true psychology of spirit, using a phenomenological approach to the human senses, the life processes, the I-experience, the human form, and the human relationship to higher spiritual worlds. Steiner struggled to express the concepts related in this book, since many of the terms used in neurology, psychology, and cognitive studies did not yet exist in 1910. Since then there has been much progress, and this translation benefits from more than eighty years of development in the study of the human senses, cognition, and, neurology.

Steiner's "Anthroposophy" lies halfway between anthropology and theosophy as a means of studying the human being. On the one hand, anthropology studies the human being through the physical senses using empirical scientific method; theosophy, on the other hand, recognizes the spiritual nature of the human being based on inner experience and attempts to understand human nature within the realm of spirit. Anthroposophy takes the middle way, studying human beings as they present themselves to physical observation while, at the same time, attempting to derive indications of the spiritual foundations of phenomena through a process of "phenomenological intensification." The results of this intensification are extremely important and constitute the first steps toward a truly cognitive psychology.

Included are an introduction by neurologist Dr. James Dyson, an anthroposophic doctor; a foreword by Robert Sardello, co-founder and co-director of The School of Spiritual Psychology; and a translator's preface by Detlef Hardorp.

While not an easy text, Anthroposophy (A Fragment) is essential for understanding Steiner's view of the human body―especially its formation and function in relation to spirit.

    About the Author
Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925) was born in the small village of Kraljevec, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now in Croatia), where he grew up. As a young man, he lived in Weimar and Berlin, where he became a well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, known especially for his work with Goethe’s scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his early philosophical principles into an approach to systematic research into psychological and spiritual phenomena. Formally beginning his spiritual teaching career under the auspices of the Theosophical Society, Steiner came to use the term Anthroposophy (and spiritual science) for his philosophy, spiritual research, and findings. The influence of Steiner’s multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, various therapies, philosophy, religious renewal, Waldorf education, education for special needs, threefold economics, biodynamic agriculture, Goethean science, architecture, and the arts of drama, speech, and eurythmy. In 1924, Rudolf Steiner founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which today has branches throughout the world. He died in Dornach, Switzerland.

Robert Sardello, PhD, is cofounder (with Cheryl Sanders-Sardello, PhD, in 1992) of the School of Spiritual Psychology. At the University of Dallas, he served as chair of the Department of Psychology, head of the Institute of Philosophic Studies, and graduate dean. He is also cofounder and a faculty member of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, as well as author of more than 200 articles in scholarly journals and cultural publications, and is a former faculty member of the Chalice of Repose Project in Missoula, Montana. Having developed spiritual psychology based in archetypal psychology, phenomenology, and the spiritual science of Rudolf Steiner from more than thirty-five years of research in this discipline, as well as holding positions in two universities, Dr. Sardello is now an independent teacher and scholar, teaching all over the U.S., Canada, and the U.K., as well as the Czech Republic, the Philippines, and Australia. He is a consultant to many educational and cultural institutions and a dissertation adviser at numerous academic institutions. He is author of several books, including Facing the World with Soul; Love and the World; Freeing the Soul from Fear; The Power of Soul: Living the Twelve Virtues. and Silence.

Dr. James A. Dyson, MD, has worked as an anthroposophic physician for nearly 30 years, developing a special interest in the fields of mental health and child development. He was the co-founder, with Dr. Michael Evans, of Park Attwood Clinic in 1979, an anthroposophic residential and out-patient facility, where he continued to practice until 2003. James has also worked as a school doctor for over 20 years in several Steiner-Waldorf Schools in the UK and as a medical adviser in the field of learning disabilities for the Camphill Village Trust and Garvald Centre (Edinburgh). Since leaving Park Attwood Clinic, James has increased his commitments in adult education, where he has established wide experience as a teacher and lecturer in the field of anthroposophic health and social care. He has been a faculty member of the Medical Section Mental Health Seminar (UK) for 20 years and was co-founder of the "Psychosophy Seminar" in USA (2001-2004). Currently his principal professional involvement is as Medical and Educational Adviser to the Hiram Academy, which is developing an accredited staff training for three adult education colleges for young adults with special needs, sponsored by Ruskin Mill Education Trust. He is also currently a visiting contributor to the UK Eurythmy Therapy, Rythmical Massage and Anthroposophic Doctor's Trainings and to the Dorian School of Music Therapy (US). James has a strong commitment to extending current paradigms in the field of anthroposophic psychology and is currently completing a Masters' Degree through the Institute of Psychosynthesis in London.

Detlef Hardorp was born in 1955 in Germany. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton in mathematics, which he taught at Rudolf Steiner Schools in Hessen and Bavaria. He currently speaks on politics and education at Rudolf Steiner Schools in Berlin and Brandenburg.

    a Landmark in phenomenological research
    By Jeff
Perhaps the most difficult of Rudolf Steiner's written works, "Anthroposophy; a Fragment" rewards a careful study. The work on the 10 senses is articulate such that the reader can begin to explore these modalities directly.
Equally significant to any of the content of this work is the struggled style in which it is written. Steiner never finished writing this work (or at least was never satisfied enough to publish)primarily because of the difficulty in finding a language which could hold this highly particular and objective description of phenomenological research.
The introductions are both helpful, especially Robert Sardello's preface which stands on its own as a significant step towards a new psychology based in a revisioned phenomenology. For those interested in reading an example of a highly individualized articulation of some of the perceptions which Steiner points to in this work, I would recommend reading Robert Sardello's groundbreaking work in spiritual psychology, "Love and the World".

What Makes a Great City, by Alexander Garvin

What makes a great city? Not a good city or a functional city but a great city. A city that people admire, learn from, and replicate. City planner and architect Alexander Garvin set out to answer this question by observing cities, largely in North America and Europe, with special attention to Paris, London, New York, and Vienna.

For Garvin, greatness is not just about the most beautiful, convenient, or well-managed city; it isn’t even about any “city.” It is about what people who shape cities can do to make a city great. A great city is not an exquisite, completed artifact. It is a dynamic, constantly changing place that residents and their leaders can reshape to satisfy their demands. While this book does discuss the history, demographic composition, politics, economy, topography, history, layout, architecture, and planning of great cities, it is not about these aspects alone. Most importantly, it is about the interplay between people and public realm, and how they have interacted throughout history to create great cities.

To open the book, Garvin explains that a great public realm attracts and retains the people who make a city great. He describes exactly what the term public realm means, its most important characteristics, as well as providing examples of when and how these characteristics work, or don’t. An entire chapter is devoted to a discussion of how particular components of the public realm (squares in London, parks in Minneapolis, and streets in Madrid) shape people’s daily lives. He concludes with a look at how twenty-first century initiatives in Paris, Houston, Atlanta, Brooklyn, and Toronto are making an already fine public realm even better—initiatives that demonstrate what other cities can do to improve.

What Makes a Great City will help readers understand that any city can be changed for the better and inspire entrepreneurs, public officials, and city residents to do it themselves.

    Review
"Imagine you're a renowned author, an adjunct member of the faculty at Yale University, and the president of AGA Public Realm Strategists. Would you be surprised if you found yourself unable to answer a question about the fundamental nature of cities? That was the dilemma facing Alexander Garvin as he pondered a question from a friend: "What makes a great city?" Given the resources afforded to someone with the aforementioned accomplishments, Garvin set out to answer the question by traveling the world and identifying the common traits of great cities. His conclusion: people make cities great, and only in cities with great public realms do people have the opportunity to make a great city." (Planetizen)

"A well-researched and compelling treatise on how cities become and remain great, What Makes a Great City is something else as well: a love letter to the ideals of urban life at its best."  (Civil Engineering)

"Only a great urban raconteur and connoisseur like Alex Garvin can lead you, with his observant eye and erudite mind, through such an enlightening journey. This is an absolute must-read for students and lovers of cities worldwide." (Ricky Burdett Professor of Urban Studies, London School of Economics and Political Science)

"Garvin reveals the animating life force within cities from Barcelona to Brooklyn with the sharp eye of an architect, an anthropologist, and an economist, and with the ardent ability to distinguish great public places from mere space." (Janette Sadik-Khan Bloomberg Associates, former New York City Transportation Commissioner)

"Garvin here explores the importance of public spaces to public life —and how a 'great' city, unlike a great painting or sculpture, is not an exquisite, completed artifact." (San Francisco Chronicle)

"For cities and the public realm, Alexander Garvin is a modern-day Alexis de Tocqueville and Alexander von Humboldt wrapped together and tied up with a bow! His keen, wise observations, analysis, and insights in What Makes a Great City are a splendid gift to urbanites around the world." (Eugenie L. Birch Nussdorf Professor of Urban Research, School of Design, University of Pennsylvania)

"For urbanists, planners, and architects who appreciate well-designed public spaces, Alexander Garvin’s latest publication delivers a carefully constructed tour of cities that accomplish this goal. He shows how they successfully created or enhanced parks, plazas, and squares or established a broader array of civic improvements to attract investment and enhance quality of life."  (Architectural Record)

"For those who dream of spending a few days talking with an experienced planner who combines a detailed knowledge of many cities with a structure of thought to place those details in...well, that might not happen. Luckily, we have Alexander Garvin's What Makes a Great City. It's somewhat more personal, but no less rigorous, than his earlier books." (Planning)

"Hundreds of photo illustrations, good writing, and nice organization make What Makes a Great City a perfect volume to add to the libraries of city planners, architects, local politicans, and civic leaders."  (Manhattan Book Review)

"Garvin's previous books...are must-reads for all students of the city. In this latest book, he grabs the reader in the introduction by explaining how he came to write it: he was asked to name the cities he considers great and why. The result is a visual picnic, thanks to Garvin's gorgeous photographs...and an important addition to planning literature." (Yale Constructs)

"When I was the mayor of Miami, Alex Garvin inspired me to improve the city by enhancing its public realm--its streets, squares, and parks. Now, by reading What Makes a Great City, you, too, can be inspired to make the investments that will help your city prosper, compete in a globally competitive economy, and provide generations to come with a better future." (Manny Diaz former Mayor of Miami and former President of the United States Conference of Mayors)

    Great read!
    By Sandra Steele
I am a Planning Commissioner and I heard the author speak. I immediately came home and ordered the book. It has changed my view on how public spaces should be designed. I usually struggle with the academic type books but I read this one like a novel.

Review of What Makes a Great City by Alexander Garvin John F
    By John M.
Review of What Makes a Great City by Alexander Garvin
    John F. Meigs, Reviewer
Alexander Garvin's new book, "What Makes a Great City" is an admirable addition to his impressive array of urbanism scholarship. Garvin, a life-long denizen of New York except for college years at Yale, has cities in his blood and, after a few years working as an architect, has for decades taught a college course on cities, their problems and solutions, served on city planning commissions, worked as a real estate developer and in a variety of other urban roles. On top of that, he has continuously roamed the cities of the world with his camera and inquiring eye. This book is the latest distillation of his observations.

Garvin has a strong belief in appropriate government and civic action intertwined with a private market response as the formula for reviving or building the livable city. This book focuses on what he calls the "Public Realm" which he defines as not only streets, squares, parks, but everything that is accessible to the public. The core of the book is the history of the development of various spaces and places in certain cities and how that happened. He points out the mistaken notions of Le Corbusier, with his antiseptic plans in which people are either confined to their apartment or going someplace in automobiles. Robert Moses, responsible for much of New York city's great public resources and a hero of Garvin’s is appropriately taken to task for his plan to put an elevated highway through Greenwich Village.

Garvin's book is really, to a large extent, about reclaiming the city for people on foot or bicycle and the like from domination by the automobile and other vehicles, though he never comes out and says so directly. What is lurking beneath Garvin's fluid text is the transformation of his subject cities in several stages. First, they were, for the most part, places of heavy industry or horse-drawn trade where many people lived in relative squalor within walking distance of smoke-spewing noisy industry or crowded markets filthy with horse dung. Next, the automobile and truck appeared and, for a while, made the city work better without overly impinging on urban life. After that, gradually the core of the city became overrun with these vehicles and many people with means retreated to the quieter, cleaner suburbs.

Garvin's book is focused on the next happy stage where the cities he describes are repurposed as places where people want to live as well as work. He describes in detail the strategies that smart city leaders, working with the various constituencies of residents, investors and business owners, have adopted to remake their city into a comfortable, exciting and resource-rich place for people, whether or not they work there. These strategies mainly involve the Public Realm and its interaction with private businesses and investors. More specifically, a large part of the solution generally involves limiting car traffic in the core so that people can reacquire space formerly devoted to vehicular traffic and thereby support businesses and multiple amenities. In that regard, the future looks promising as we benefit from general disenchantment with the automobile among younger people and experience pooled riding with Uber and Lyft.

As with any book, a reader has minor quibbles. How, for instance, do the private squares of London enhance the Public Realm if the public can’t get into them? And why does a park have to have something for everybody? Can't it just be really good at a few things?

Overall, however, "What makes a Great City" offers a well-conceived and well-described formula for making our good cities great and our great cities even better. And the photographs are wonderful.

Great book for those aspiring to be city planners or mayors. Emphasizes public spaces
    By JAMES FIORENTINI
I love this book! The writer reviews, with hundreds of photographs, parks, walkways, streets, boulevards and other public places that make a city great with the message, you can do it and become a great city! As the mayor of a city of 62,000 it is inspiring. My only problems (questions) really with the book are -- does he adequately emphathize the basics, and to what degree does a great and visionary leader make a great city?

On the basics, before a city can be a great city, it must be a safe city and must have a transportation network that will allow everyone to get to and around the city.

But these things aside, the book is an inspiring look at public areas in the US and Europe and gives some great ideas to city planners and mayorrs. Highly recommended.

"Concise but rich in essentials―and well written besides―this book introduces the core ideas and people in psychology’s history. The book has never had any competition, from the first edition to the present day." - Dean Keith Simonton, University of California, Davis, USA

"This engaging and well-written account of psychology’s "long past and brief history" provides a concise introduction to a huge topic. Just as the title suggested, this provide a "brief" history of psychology. The reading is fairly easy but due to the limitation being placed due to the book being concise, there are some confusions that require background of the subject prior to reading this book. I won't suggest this as a starter but rather a refresher for those who appreciate and wishes to re-enforce psychology in a historical content.

    Authentic, delicious food
    By Samer S. Sadek
Having grown up in Egypt, I had no idea what I took for granted. Delicious stuffed tomatoes, fresh lemony salads, vine leaves, meat stews. It's such a pleasure to find a book that allows me to recreate these meals I had back at home. It's easy to follow and the ingredients are readily available here in the States. I recommend this book for everyone.

Are we talking about the same cookbook?
    By halalchickennugget
When even rice pudding doesnt turn out right, after following the directions to the letter....you can safely say that a cookbook was poorly written.

Simply dissolve sugar in milk, then add rice and simmer on low for 15-20 minutes? Hardly. I started out with a low flame....and was still waiting for the rice to soften 45 minutes later. I made rice pudding out of the Good Housekeeping Cookbook, and I'd much sooner make rice pudding their way----you start out with a boil (to cook the inner core of the grain of rice), and THEN reduce to low and simmer. Works every time.

Ms. Abdennour should also mention to the novice, that it is necessary to stir the rice pudding continuously, or it will stick to the pan and BURN. However the word "stir" was not even mentioned in the recipe! This may seem like common sense to most, but cookbooks should be written at the level of a novice.

The rice in my pudding ended up having a hard, uncooked center. And when I went to taste it (aside from the bitterly hard rice) I felt there was way too much sugar.

In addition the cookbook has a strange format...the pages are numbered but the recipes are indexed not by page number but by recipe number (they are actually numbered from 1 on up) I much prefer good old fashioned page numbers---whats wrong with that?

Also, the author seems to be unfamiliar with the names of certain items in the West. When a recipe calls for "gullash" this corresponds to our "phyllo dough" however the author seems to not know that we have a word for this....so she describes it as "fresh, paper thin sheets of dough at your local bakery"....gee thanks, that would help the novice cook! I know that she is describing phyllo dough, but would a novice know?

In addition, I made kuftat ras al asfur. Again, following the instructions to the letter resulted in a bland tomato sauce.

Some recipe instructions amounted to no more than four sentences, when surely they are a bit more complex to make and worth describing in a bit more detail.

There are better Arabic cookbooks out there...I just haven't found them yet. This cookbook is suited to someone who is familiar with making these dishes....maybe then they can fill in the details which Abdennour fails to mention. But then one wonders, why would these people need a cookbook in the first place?

Don't think this is a second cookbook by the same author!
    By Sofia White
Well... first of all DO NOT click on the link to "buy these books together" (referriing to the amazon offer to buy this book and her other book "Egyptian Cooking, a practical guide") as this book contains ALL the recipes in the first edition, along with additional recipes. You will be WASTING your money as i did (I gave the first edition away, no need to keep it, for me I bought them years apart, for you it will be money down the drain or a headache with the return) Amazon should NOT be offering them together.

Being that this book basically consists of the other book and then some, I will go over in a nutshell the comments i made of the other as they also apply here.

Its good for the basics if you're already familiar with the cuisine. The arabic/english spice translations are helpful. Her instructions are thoroughly lacking, so if you are not an experienced cook, or are not familiar with egyptian/middle eastern cooking, you might have a hard time with the recipes as they would have benefited from a little more description. (for more on that see my review of the other book) They are written in a very matter of fact way, just mix, shape, saute..... They don't really sound very appealing. The recipe numbers not corresponding to page numbers is annoying but you get used to i (the recipes are numbered, page 1 might have recipes 1-3, page 2 recipes 4-6, page 3 recipes 7 and 8, and the index refers to the recipe number, not page number so the recipe for falafel could be recipe 6 which would be on page 2), as well as the fact that to make a recipe containing tomato sauce, you've got to refer to the tomato sauce recipe on another page (consisting of tomato sauce, salt and pepper).

The additional recipes are not egyptian and are really not of any value to me as there are tons of other middle eastern recipe books out there that are FAR better than this one.

The only reason I would recommend this book at all is that it is specifically Egyptian, and if you are even reading this review it probably means you want an Egyptian cookbook (rather than a generic Middle eastern cookbook.) If that is the case, then i would consider going with "My Egyptian Grandmother's Kitchen" by Magda Mehdawy, as she has pictures with all her recipes and at least that gets your taste buds going (oh, yeah that was also a problem with Abdennour's books, you could read the whole thing and not be all that impressed by anything). I would pair that with either Claudia Roden's The New Book of Middle Eastern Food (Five Star) or Mary Bsisu's The Arab Table (Also 5 Stars). When you want to cook something, first try to find it in one of the latter books, if you can, read the recipe, then refer to Mehdawy's book and see the Egyptian take on it. Of course Roden and Bsisu books are not going to have all the Egyptian recipes that Abdennour's has, but you will see the difference in the instructions immediately.

I rated the first edition 3 stars because at the time I reviewed I couldn't find other egyptian cookbooks, Abdennour had the whole market. With Mehdaway's cookbook, (and another Egyptian one that i just spotted but havent bought yet, Abdennour has lost the sole claim on the Egyptian cookbook market, thus this second edition isn't as valuable or necessary. So i am rating it 2 stars.

You could really just go with the previous version
    By Nazareth
After I rented this book, my professor said that we could've just gone with the previous version (6th Edition) because it contains the exact same information with negligible changes to the content. Would've been nice if the professor mentioned this before I rented the book and saved me some money, But glad Amazon rents textbooks and very comparable prices.

    I agree with this book
    By Braden McMillin
The reason I say that I agree with this book is because a majority of this book that informed of what I should do as a supervisor was what I would have already done in that situation so for me the only things I learned from this book was the technical terms for what some things were called and some laws involving ethics. this means to me that either A this book is filled with relatively common knowledge or B I would just make an awesome supervisor because my instinctual thought process gives me all the right answers. I would recommend renting this book before you make the decision of buying it. I wont be buying this book because laws and technical terms was the only thing it helped me with in that case I believe I can find a better book but if you need help deciding what to do as a supervisor then perhaps this book is meant for you.
