About the Author
Mourad Fakhfakh was born in Sfax, Tunisia in 1969. He received the Engineering, the PhD, and the Habilitation degrees from the National Engineering School of Sfax, Tunisia, in 1996, 2006, and 2011, respectively. From 1998 to 2004, he worked at the Tunisian National Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG) as the head of the technical intervention department. In September 2004, he joined the National School of Electronics and Telecommunications (ENETCom), formerly the High Institute of Electronics and Communications (ISECS), where he is working as an Associate Professor. Dr. Fakhfakh is an IEEE senior member. He has (co)authored 2 books and more than 100 papers in high-impact journals, international conferences, and book chapters. He regularly serves as a reviewer in high impact-factor international journals and conferences. Dr. Fakhfakhs research interests include symbolic analysis techniques, analog circuit synthesis and design automation, and optimization techniques.

Esteban Tlelo-Cuautle received a BSc degree from the Instituto Tecnol�gico de Puebla, M�xico, in 1993. He then received both MSc and PhD degrees from the Instituto Nacional de Astrof�sica, �ptica y Electr�nica (INAOE), M�xico, in 1995 and 2000, respectively. In 2001, he was appointed as Professor-Researcher at INAOE. During 2009-2010, he served as a Visiting Researcher at University of California at Riverside, USA. He has authored and co-authored 10 books, 20 book chapters, 75 journal articles, and more than 150 conference papers. He is IEEE Senior Member and serves as Associate Editor in IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II, Integration The VLSI Journal, and The Scientific World Journal. His research interests include systematic circuit synthesis techniques, modeling and simulation of linear and nonlinear circuits and systems, design and applications of chaotic oscillators, symbolic circuit analysis, multi-objective optimization by evolutionary algorithms, and analog/RF and mixed-signal design automation tools.

Maria Helena Fino received the PhD degree in Electrotechnical Engineering from the New University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1995. She is an Assistant Professor at the Electrotechnical Department of the Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT). Since 2012, she is the coordinator for the Integrated Master on Electrotechnical and Computer Science Engineering in FCT. She co-authored seven book chapters and several journal/conference papers. She was invited for a Plenary Session on IEEE-Mixdes 2013. She has been a reviewer forIEEE Transactions on CAD and for Analog Integrated Circuits and Signal Processing from Springer. Her current research interests include the development/use of compact models for passive and active components and the use of Verilog-A for the implementation of compact models and optimisation-based methodologies for the design of RF/Analog circuits in nanometric technologies.

Very narrow focus - disappointed reader

I bought this book following an MBA course I took on relationships in the workplace. I'm from a science background, where networking is almost a dirty word since it implies narrow interests where science is supposed to be about curiosity and the unbiased search for truth. I was hoping to get a better understanding of the networking process, the tools available both online and off and the tips and tricks that aren't obvious to those with reasonable people-skills.

Unfortunately the cons outweighed the pros on this one. Granted there are some nuggets to be found wihtin, but these are few and far between.

1) Excessive self-promotion - many of the references to other books are books written by Dr. Misner. BNI, the business referral network Dr. Misner founded is also mentioned often. Other popular references are to Misner's coauthors books, either coauthors on this book or other books. Granted that Misner is an expert on all things networking, but are there no others?
The prefix "Dr." is also mentioned very often before Misner's name. This may be a pet peeve of mine, but I can't help but get annoyed to see "Dr. Ivan Misner" so frequently in a book by Dr. Ivan Misner.
Bottom line, while Misner highlights credibility as an important part of networking, he does this poorly.

The book also opens with a story about a a BBC show called The Last Millionaire where the contestants are dropped off in the middle of Hong Kong with a little money and are expected to create a business to generate money from that starting amount. The winner in this story is the woman who was a member of BNI and got in touch with the local chapter to tap into their resources. This is exactly what Misner repeats NOT TO DO throughout the book - network for sheer profit (thought BNI got considerable press coverage in return :-)

2) Narrow focus - this book seems to have been written with small-to-medium sized local American businesses. Chamber of commerce events, Rotary meetings, referral networks (I'm pretty sure this one's a category that includes only Misner's BNI) - if you're a scientist in academia, a student on campus or part of a large company, this is entire irrelevant to you. You're not a business owner! You don't need contacts to generate business, you need contacts to leverage your career! This books offers no advice for you whatsoever.

3) Outdated - the year is 2011. This is the age of Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and smart phones. Misner barely acknowledge the existence of these things, and does not mention communication by email or text messages at all (is it good? is it bad? when is it appropriate?). He mentions using a database to store contacts, and actually spends several pages explaining why it's necessary to lose the Rolodex and us a computer. This isn't 1996 - most business use computers to operate and most have their own website. Misner recommends a website for tracking referrals and once again takes the opportunity to promote an associate (credibility?).

Ultimately I learned more about networking in 25 page Harvard Business School case study about a entrepreneur named Heidi Roizen than I did from this 250 page book by three "masters".

I would recommend Me 2.0, Revised and Updated Edition: 4 Steps to Building Your Future instead. While it focuses on marketing yourself rather than outright networking, its target audience is much broader.

More than a book: It's a Lifestyle

If you own only one book on Networking this should be the one. I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book since Dr. Misner was a guest on Being Here the Internet radio show my husband and I host, and we were delighted to read it. Ivan and his co-authors David Alexander and Brian Hilliard do a brilliant job laying out their core value that networking is not about getting leads and making contacts but about building meaningful connections.

Networking Like a Pro builds upon itself with real life examples from the authors' extensive experiences. It investigates your mindset about networking, moves on to strategies, shows how to make your network work for you and then gives you the secrets of the masters. And Dr. Ivan Misner is a master. I know that readers will also really love having access to Misner's Networking Scorecard so that they can measure the results of their networking efforts. I have already loaned my copy to a friend who is new to networking and was delighted to hear that by using the tools contained in Networking Like a Pro she just booked a major job. Perhaps just as important as the new ideas you will find in Ivan's book, you will also recognize the things that you are already doing that work so that you can reinforce them and network with confidence and consistency. More than just an engaging, informative read, Networking Like a Pro is a rewarding, meaningful lifestyle. Buy this book!

Whether you do or don't know how to network, this book is for you.

Firstly I would say, I hate networking. Now, I still hate it, just hate it less, much less. But face it, networking is important to businesses, especially if you're an entrepreneur.

This book is simple, gives solid examples and execution strategies, a process to follow and best of all, a way to measure the success of your networking efforts; as an engineer, that was golden.

Now I'm more focused in my efforts, able to sift through the fluff, categorise my contacts, and see how I'm doing. The confidence I gained from just learning the process was enough to help me actually talk to people.

Now if only I could be less lazy and learn to follow up. Unfortunately, I know of no book that can do that for me, but if you do know, please let me know.

About the Author
J�rgen Konrad Mai studied medicine in Freiburg, Germany, Vienna and UT Southwestern Medical School, Dallas, U.S.A. Student and Medical practices in Freiburg (Clinic for Neurosurgery), Berlin and D�sseldorf. Dissertation ("summa cum laude") and habilitation were awarded by the University of D�sseldorf: After a period as GP in private practice (Titisee-Neustadt) he became scientific assistant and senior assistant at the C. and O. Vogt-Institute for Brain Research, University of D�sseldorf (1972 - 1983) and 1983 Professor of Neuroanatomy at the Institute of Neuroanatomy, H.-Heine-University of D�sseldorf. He served as director of the Department of the Institute of Anatomy 1 until retirement in 2011.
The main research interests are (i) the structural and molecular anatomy of the mammalian brain, especially of the human brain and (ii) expression patterns and regulation of terminal carbohydrates in development, cell activation and disease (III) operation planning in stereotactic neurosurgery. He works on a "Digital Brain Atlas for Planning and Interindividual Registration of Targets in Deep Brain Stimulation" and on a "Spatial Information Management Resource for the Human Brain". J. K. Mai has edited the catalogue of human brain sections from the Vogt collection; he is author and editor of several books, e.g. the awarded "Atlas of the Human Brain" with CD-ROM (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego), "The Human Nervous System" (Academic Press/Elsevier, San Diego, Amsterdam, 3rd ed. 2012), Funktionelle Anatomie f�r Zahnmediziner (Quintessenz, Berlin, 2nd. ed. 2008; Sensi Divini (ital., engl., ger, russ. eds). J. K. Mai is CEO of MR-X-Brain GmbH.

Professor George Paxinos, AO (BA, MA, PhD, DSc) completed his BA at The University of California at Berkeley, his PhD at McGill University, and spent a postdoctoral year at Yale University. He is the author of almost 50 books on the structure of the brain of humans and experimental animals, including The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, now in its 7th Edition, which is ranked by Thomson ISI as one of the 50 most cited items in the Web of Science. Dr. Paxinos paved the way for future neuroscience research by being the first to produce a three-dimensional (stereotaxic) framework for placement of electrodes and injections in the brain of experimental animals, which is now used as an international standard. He was a member of the first International Consortium for Brain Mapping, a UCLA based consortium that received the top ranking and was funded by the NIMH led Human Brain Project. Dr. Paxinos has been honored with more than nine distinguished awards throughout his years of research, including: The Warner Brown Memorial Prize (University of California at Berkeley, 1968), The Walter Burfitt Prize (1992), The Award for Excellence in Publishing in Medical Science (Assoc Amer Publishers, 1999), The Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research (2001), The Alexander von Humbolt Foundation Prize (Germany 2004), and more.

Wow! First let me say....not only is this one of the most beautiful fashion books I own, but it's HUGE and light! The paper on which it is printed as well as the binding is the lightest,sort of linen feeling paper I have ever seen. So many of Giambattista Valli's collections are represented, pictures are large and so many close-ups of the finest details! This book screams "Feminine"! From the pictures on the pages to the creation of the book, the word that comes to mind is Soft.
For any of you fashion lovers out there, this is an absolute must for your coffee table book library! LOVE!

About the Author
The story of GEET is also the story of its besieged inventor, Paul Pantone. He was born in 1950 in Detroit, Michigan, and began inventing as a child. He and his family moved to Southern California in 1959. In his teens, Paul built several inventions, without knowing he was inventing. Paul also built a number of handy tools including a “stud gun” for splitting firewood and a glow in the dark level with 27 different functions. During the energy crisis of the late 1970s, Paul became concerned with the high price of oil, so he set his mind to searching for a solution. By 1979, Paul had managed to discover over 250 ways of NOT getting better mileage or less pollution. He kept searching and experimenting. In 1983, Pantone created his first working GEET engine. In 1984, a local newspaper wrote a story about Paul Pantone and GEET. In 1985, Pantone & GEET were featured on the evening news. Paul continued to refine the technology. Over many years, Pantone made a number of attempts to introduce GEET to nonprofit organizations, only to find out that none of them actually wanted to support solutions like this. In 1994, Paul Pantone moved to Utah. A trust was created to protect the GEET patent. A school was created to teach GEET technology, and a corporation was created to manufacture GEET products. In 1999, Paul gave away the “small engine” part of the GEET technology still available online at teslatech.info.

Excellent for getting into the topic of semantics

This text does a fine job of leading the reader into the topic of semantics. Frequent exercises help the reader/student make sure first-concepts are secure, before moving on to the next step. I might have preferred more explanation of definitions and principles at various points, but it's a good supplement to more technical volumes like John Lyons' two-volume classic.

I had to buy this book for my semantics and pragmatics class, but I never thought I would love it! Not only is the content interesting, but it's given in a dynamic, exciting, and clear way. None of that boring textbook prose here. The text is broken up into smaller chunks, or subtitles, that make it easy to understand and process. The book is also full of mini exercise that you do as you read, since some of the concepts are better taught by example than by definition. But the exercises aren't boring or tedious. They're just as interesting as the rest of the book. This book is a really great tool for beginning learners of semantics (and maybe even some more advanced learners too).
