Of the 7 or 8 energy dictionaries I've reviewed here on Amazon.com, this is one of the best. It's contemporary. Its scope is global. The set of terms it defines is broader than those in the other energy dictionaries I've reviewed. Each definition is descriptively and explanatorily complete. Typographically, the dictionary is easy on the eyes, except for tables that begin on one page and end on another. For some reason, those transitions are messy. But that's just a minor quibble. This is a solid reference work.

EXCELLENT BOOK ON COMPLEX ANALYSIS

This is the finest book I have seen in complex analysis. The book that my class was using sucked so bad, I could not get anything from it. It was written in such an advanced manner, as if the student is studying his Phd in math. I thought I'm going to flunk the class, until i purchased this book! This book turned out to be a lifesaver for me. The author does a brilliant job in explaining complex analysis. Anyone who has never ever studied complex analysis and just has a background in basic calculus, will master this field simply by studying this book. Well done job!

As a self-learner, I was looking for a self-contained book that would teach the fundamentals of complex analysis in a straight-forward manner without getting bogged down with a lot of advanced level mathematical jargon and proofs on every page. I was also looking for a book that would show how complex analysis is applied to various physical problems. I found all of this nicely packaged in this book. The explanations for the various topics were clear, with a lot of geometrical interpretations so that you could picture what was being discussed. I found the coverage of Riemann surfaces to be a good example of this approach. There are plenty of worked examples to help deepen your understanding of the material. The problems at the end of each chapter were not extremely difficult, yet helped to reinforce or extend the chapter's concepts. For a self-learner, this is a helpful approach. It not only builds understanding, but self-confidence. I found out about this book after trying to learn complex analysis with McMahon's book Complex Variables Demystified. I lost confidence in the ability of McMahon's book to provide clear explanations of the topics after discovering all of the serious errors contained within. When I worked through the problems and text, I never knew if any of the wrong answers that I obtained were due to my lack of understanding of the topic, or due to the errors in the book. I had to turn to the internet for clearer explanations, and found the website complement to this book. I was impressed with the website, so bought the book. I was not disappointed.

Get your feet slightly damp in analysis

This book is a great way to ease into some more advanced topics in mathematics. For instance, within the first chapter you start to study topology of the complex field (mappings of sets of points, bounded sets, domains, etc). Of course none of this can be done until you establish the complex number system in terms of R which we are familiar with, and defining the arithmetic options and such. The construction of the complex field in terms of R and continually building off this idea the entire book was very fun and intuitive. It is a great help to read the semester before you take a more rigorous course in analysis, because it will give you a peak at its subtleties without beating you over the head with them.

About the Author

Michael Kieran is a leading authority on electronic color, and the author of three books and more than 100 magazine articles on color technology. Michael is vice-president of Services for E-Color, Inc. in San Francisco, where he is responsible for a team of consultants providing color management and color correction services. This book is an excellent source for understanding color science and how to correct color using Adobe Photoshop. It includes easy-to-sue methods and tips I found very useful in everyday image correcting.

Excellent primer on how to get better color from your comput

I have spent many years doing electronic prepress, color correction, and design, and one question I get repeatedly asked is "how do I get better color from my computer?". Now, I can point them in the direction of this excellent book.
Mr. Kieran provides a solid foundation of what color correction is, and why it is necessary. His first section on "Color Fundamentals" reminds me of the old "Pocket Pal" book every designer lived by, except better written. This introduction gives you a solid and understandable overview of color correction, its terms, and its purpose. Building on this foundation (don't skip it!), the book then goes on to a thorough explanation of how to use Photoshop to improve the color, tone, and quality of your digital photos.
The book is framed by what the author calls the "essentials of color correction" -- highlights and shadows, netral tones, contrast, and sharpening. I was very happy to see this organization because it mimics the process I use every time I professionally work on a photo. Mr. Kieran goes into a great amount of detail for each of these "essential" steps. He begins each section with a thorough description of the "why", then step-by-step explains the "how". The book is crammed with color photographs, clearly illustrating both technical issues like how histograms relate to changes in the image, as well as demonstrating each step of the correction process.
Two very practical sections stand out: Mr Kieran gives a great overview of all of the ways you can convert a color photo to black and white, and all of the ways you can sharpen a photo (two things I am constantly asked!). There as so many ways to do these basic tasks, it's great to have a solid description, complete with illustrations, and explanations of when to use one method over the others.
In conclusion, a good solid practical book - one that anyone serious about good photos should give a read.

Extraordinarily inspiring and touching

This is an amazing read for those interested in Buddhism, and its travels from East to West. It also put into context the search of many as Lama Ole and Hannah Nydahl for an experience of mind, of something beyond the ordinary lives of these Western generations. It is an endless source of inspiration for it allows us as westerners to see a more down to earth, yet majestic and extraordinary approach to the Buddhist teachings from a yogi perspective. And gives hope for the further development of Buddhism, in particular Tibetan Buddhism in the West as we learn about its firs steps towards the West.

essence of modern buddism

Must-have reading for all who wants to know basics of Buddhism, especially Diamond Way Buddhism point of view. Stripped down from cultural traces, pure Buddha's teachings from lama (Buddhist teacher) who meditates 35 years. Was easy to read for me, should be fairly easy for most of you, as Ole says it contains 7 levels of techings. Happy reading!

There are not so many books in millions which holds the transmission of buddhist teachings.
This is one of them. Incredible story, and soon will be the history of Buddhism on the west.

I wish I wrote the book, because I would be so proud

When you have an idea that is great (inside your own head) you really want to go out there and get more positive feedback to build the idea further. Yes, positive feedback. The idea is a good one. So all those people saying "Not interesting" or "Yeah, but.." are not the ones we want to meet, but the ones saying "Yes! I love it! I would buy it when it is out!". It took me a while to learn that those are the worst kind. The negative feedback you can learn to receive, listen to, and ask "why?" and dig deeper and these people are really rewarding. The problem is the nasty ones that "don't want to hurt your feelings" or just want you to stop bothering them. And the best way to get you silence is to say that the like it - or even better say they love it. Then you will not ask anything more and go home with a smile. But they just want to get rid of you. This is the problem The Mom Test helps you solving.

I have always been interested in people and what they think and love ask people questions. I have built a company which was required for $150m and I did 99% of the customer development and problem discovery. I have taken a course in open questions as an interview format. BUT STILL - I find myself tricking myself by not asking people the right questions.

I loved The Mom Test and have recommended it to tons of people. Heck - I wish I would have written the book!

When you ask to get feedback thing:
1. Tell me about the last time you X
2. What went wrong - explain more?
3. What are the consequences?
4. What tools/processes/etc do you use today and why is that not working?

And - the book is worthwhile reading even if you are not building a product (even if it should be mandatory in every "entrepreneurship eduction"), but just want to learn how to listen and make conversations less about you and learn something every time you talk to someone.

What you really need to know from your customers - why and how

The Mom Test is exactly what I needed at exactly the right time. It's a complete guide to real customer understanding. I'm a first time entrepreneur starting up a web based social travel and language website. I've done a lot of research on idea validation and customer development, but none have been as easy to understand, useful, comprehensive, straight forward and eye opening as this. Let me explain.

As a founder I was very confident with my business idea from feedback I had got from friends and acquaintances. Who isn't? Based on what I was asking, who I was asking and how I was asking it, I had no reason not to be (blindly) confident. But I still had some lingering doubts that my target market might not feel the same way. Then Rob released this book and I snapped it up. I've taken a course run by him in the past so I knew he was a guru on the topic.

While reading it I soon realised that my approach was completely wrong and was only going to give me responses I wanted to hear, that were not a true reflection of what people actually thought. Useless, and it easily could have taken me down the wrong path.

The Mom Test explained exactly what I was doing wrong and why, with easy to understand examples. Then it gave me a step by step process of how to have real conversations with the right people to get relevant information, with reasoning behind each part of the process. I'm still learning, but now my conversations are far more real and give me useful information.

The most interesting thing is that before reading this book I had no idea how badly I was conducting my customer research. And I doubt it's just me because what I was doing seemed to be ok and made some sort of sense. The real value of this book is in the right way to do it, which is probably not what you would think.

Finally, I would say this book is a must read for early stage businesses as well as later stage businesses that want a deeper understanding of their customers.

Ps. Thankfully, now I'm even more confident with my business.

Discover The Truth

Wow. This book created a paradigm shift in my understanding of how to ask good questions. I have a better understanding on how to write meaty questions. This book has leveled up my ability to conduct proper customer interviews.

Rob manages to discuss not only what questions are good or bad, but why. He uses great example business ideas which are easy to understand. Frames the examples with bad questions and explains in great length why they will lead us to false truths. He discusses our need for validation and how it outpaces our primary goal of gathering good data.

130 pages and I don't believe a drop of it was wasted. Streamlined and ended with a cheat sheet. Before buying I was skeptical of the $30 price tag; after reading, I understand that the price equates to the quality.
