There's a great plot here being overwhelmed by sex scenes

Can dark erotica have too much sex? I guess the answer in this case is Yes. A great dark read balances advancing the plot with embracing the erotica. There were too many rape scenes that weren't particularly sexy or even dark. I think we got that Anna is toy to be passed around pretty early on. Endless scenes of this happening just got boring. It doesn't tell anything more about Anna - we know she accepts her life; it doesn't tell us anything more about Devin - this is what he's been plotting to do with her since birth. It did tell us that Alex is weak, but we see that from other aspects of the story. The book could have been shorter and tighter if half of those scenes were eliminated. I found myself skipping over many of these scenes without losing the thread of the story.

The background plot - an illuminati like cult is trying to take over the US government - didn't advance all that much. We did see a couple of politician succumb to Devin, but to what end remains unclear. There is more paranormal activity than the last book, but I feel somewhat confused that the Immortals in the US want to allow the Elders have more power as history says this is a bad thing for the Immortals. Thus, the motivation remains unclear. This is a long book - we should know more.

Anna had moments of growth - she has some powers - but then those moments got cast aside instead of developed. Alex seemed to descend into pussydom as he realized that Devin really was more powerful than he was (of course he was - he's an Elder and been at this game longer, as well as being comfortable in his unapologetic dark ruthlessness - why is Alex's dad not helping more?).

Despite this, I will read the next one. I like this dystopian, paranormal world. I am hoping that Anna and Alex find some power, either together or separately, to fight back against Devin. I am hoping that Anna spends less time being raped and more time living.

I Love this Book!

Entwined is perfectly named second novel by the brilliant author Marissa Honeycutt. It is unique in premise and absolutely a must read for fans of dark erotica. Read the warning and believe it. If the warning makes you nervous this book is not for you. If you read the warning and think that sounds intriguing then go buy a copy now and start reading the best book I have read in years.

This is a wonderfully crafted, well thought out, and beautifully written book. Anna’s life is horrific, complicated and manipulated since before her birth. Devin desires power by using Anna, Alex has intruded into Devin’s plans and becomes her Master along with Devin. Life becomes complicated as Anna’s new Masters have different expectations and goals for her. Making things more complicated are her own desires and talents that she has yet to fully explore.

Anna is a lovely girl/woman. I say girl/woman because at 20 she is both worldly and naïve. Unlike most young women she is a sex slave, learning the world and dealing with constant abuse. She is charming, trusting and kind and the sort of person you would want as a friend.

Alex is a complicated man and may make the best hero ever-- if he proves himself worthy. Anna’s other Master Devin is evil and I’m glad I have never stood near him with a sharp object. He is a master manipulator and a character I love to hate. Devin may be one of the best bad guys ever.

I am a little in love with Greg.

Warning: there are several scenes in this book that will turn your stomach with the graphic terror cruelty or violence. This book is not for the faint of heart, but if you stick with the journey it will be completely worth it.

This is a not a standalone novel, but it is also huge novel at around 157,000 words. If you have not yet read Enslaved, Life of Anna then you will need to pick that book up first.

I was given a copy of this book to read, but not in exchange for a review. I have also pre-ordered a copy. I just really love this book and feel very lucky to read drafts of this book along the way. So congratulations on the publication of your second book. Your #1 fan.

A bit much

when I started reading the series I was thinking there was only gonna be a total of 3...but 5? I don't know if I can stomach another 3. I do like the storyline, which is why I continued with the second installment. And I like dark. The author sends a warning that the other books are much darker than the first, which was pretty dark. At first I didn't think so, but after the first half, yes it is very VERY dark. it seems like anna gets raped and tortured on just about every page.

I know that anna has been trained to be submissive and weak minded. And during the first book I found it sweet the way she was so trusting and forgiving. Almost childlike. But this book I just wanted to smack her and tell her to wake up! I mean a boy beats her and rapes her in the limo, and then she is sad to leave him. grrrrr.

And Alex. useless in this book. I'll read the next one, but if she and Alex don't get a little bit empowered, I can't read anymore.

And the recipes collected and tested by the members of the San Francisco Junior League measure up to that standard in every way.

This isn't an upscale accumulation of everyone's favorite catered food or takeout treats. This is about thoughtful, flavorful, contemporary food you would serve to your family. It's definitely about food you would take the time and trouble to serve to guests of your family. It's food that takes into account the many ethnic influences of San Francisco and takes advantage of the fresh products that pour into that city's farmer's markets. San Francisco Flavors, in some ways, sends out a clarion call to all other cities to pay attention to nearby farmlands and the farmers who work the soil, and to establish farmer's markets in their own communities so everyone can know what real food is all about.

But the recipes. There are chapters devoted to appetizers, soups, salads, entr�es, side dishes, brunches, beverages, and desserts. Company Food that Reflects San Francisco

These recipes are for elegant, delicious dishes to serve your friends and family. They all reflect the ethnic and culinary influences that make up California cuisine, including tips from such people as Arnold Wong and Alice Waters. All of the food is fancy, but not everything is complicated: the Cambazola Apricots are an easy-to-make appetizer, while the Blueberry French Toast can be whipped up the night before for brunch. This is a must-own for anyone who loves food or who loves San Francisco.

My Favorite Cookbook

I've had this book for over 2 years and have loved every recipe I've made from it, many of which have become standards in our house. Try the delicious and easy apple cake with hot caramel sauce, the chicken breasts with wild mushrooms and balsamic vinegar and the awesome chicken pot pie with sage biscuit topping. Easy to follow directions and nice tips from the chefs who submitted the recipes.

A great way to create the tastes of San Francisco at home!

This is not your average Junior League Cookbook! This cookbook is a wonderful culinary treat. The recipes celebrate the tastes of San Francisco and the Bay Area. From the appetizers through desserts you will find exciting recipes such as Chilled Avocado-Cilantro Soup, Lemon Pepper Duck with Red Wine Sauce, Wild Mushroom and Potato Lasagna, and Crustless Santa Rosa Plum and Almond Tart. The book also contains updated recipes for such classics as Roasted Dungeness Crab with Fresh Herbs and Garlic, California Minestrone with Olives, and old fashioned Chocolate Fudge Cake. Recipes are easy to understand and many contain helpful tips from such renowned chefs as Reed Hearon of Rose Pistola and Black Cat, Thomas Keller of The French Laundry, and Flo Braker. Alice Waters of Chez Panisse has contributed her comments in the book's foreword. There is something for everyone in this book! About the Author
Don Taylor grew up in the auto trimming business: his father was a trimmer, Don is a trimmer, and his two sons were trained as trimmers as they grew up. As an expert author, Don created the Automotive Upholstery Handbook for California Bill’s and has written six other automotive books on engine rebuilding, restoration and paint and body work.

Ron Mangus started his career in 1969, and since then has become famous as the stitcher who creates fabulous interiors. His work has received numerous awards, including "Most Beautiful Roadster" and "Best Interior Award". His interiors and how-to articles featuring his techniques have appeared in many street and hot rod magazines.

Three and a half stars, really...

I finally decided to do something about the half-disintegrated and shockingly smelly interior of my '52 Chevy pickup. Now, the smart thing would have been to hand it off to a professional and pick it up a few weeks later completely done. Unfortunately, the six grand or so it would have cost me is almost as much as the truck's worth. So, perhaps unwisely, I decided to do it myself. It's now 90% finished (see pic) and I have to admit that I owe a large portion of my success to this book. It's undoubtedly the best thing on the market.

Having said that, though, it's far from perfect. The photos are poor quality snapshots that make it hard to see three-dimensional shapes, there are strange omissions, and many of the brand recommendations are downright bizarre.

But instead of waxing rhapsodic about the book's problems, I'm going to use the rest of my review to try to give you the benefit of my hard-won experience. Keep in mind that my project was about as difficult as they get--I had to make everything custom, because my truck didn't have much of an interior when it was originally manufactured. Yours should be easier.

OMISSIONS
This book is obsessed with using chipboard to make complex shapes that can then be upholstered. All very lovely if the shape isn't too complex to wrap smoothly and if this is the look you're going for. In many cases, it's much easier to use fiberglass and body filler to create a paintable custom piece. This is standard practice for virtually everything relating to stereo enclosures (see mine in the photo.) The only reason I can think of that the technique isn't so much as mentioned is that the authors are currently writing a book about it. Check the web for pretty much all the info you need to make whatever you want.

There is no information provided on the tools you'll need, no instruction on sewing, omissions in the information on laying carpet, etc., which (probably intentionally) forces you to read Taylor's Automotive Upholstery Handbook.

WHAT YOU WANT TO AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE
Sewing is hard. And even if, like me, you can con your mother into doing it, then you have seams to deal with and they are brutal to keep straight when you're gluing. Design your interior to keep sewing to a minimum.

I would rather stick my tongue in a hornet's nest than glue in a custom headliner. Nine yards of contact cement-covered material suspended over your head, trying to stick to everything, including your hair. And one mistake, you get to rip it all out. Granted, mine is ridiculously hard due to the acute angles in the back of the cab, but still you should still seriously consider having this done professionally.

BRAND RECOMMENDATIONS
There aren't many in this book, but almost none make sense based on my experience.

Glue is all important--the difference between an easy five-minute job and an endless disaster. The only advice given (actually in the Automotive Upholstery Handbook as I recall) is to buy the most expensive stuff you can find. This is just as stupid as it sounds. I tried Stick-it, Tac-it, and Duo-something, among others. All with horrible results. DO NOT USE ANYTHING THAT ISN'T MADE BY 3M!!! Note the cheesy use of caps and multiple exclamation marks. I'm serious here.

Q-pads: This is a messy, expensive, and obsolete asphalt sound deadener. Use RAAM-Mat or go to sounddeadenershowdown if you want to really geek out on the subject.

Mellowhide: This is nice vinyl and I used it based on their recommendation, but it's hard to find and apparently it doesn't store well in non-climate controlled situations, prompting my supplier (the excellent Larry Dennis company) to quit carrying it. It's probably an off-gassing issue and I haven't had a problem with the installed interior, but if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't take the chance.

OTHER TIPS
Foam dulls razorblades incredibly fast and a dull blade can ruin hours' worth of work in the blink of an eye. Figure three feet of cutting in 1/4 foam before you have to throw the blade away.

I made the mistake of using glue in rattle cans. Buy a gallon of the stuff and spray it with a primer gun. It's far cheaper and will give you a more consistent coating with no globs that might telegraph through your material.

This is not a science, it's an art. Buy some cheap materials and play around before trying something that's actually going to go in your car. It's not complicated, but it can be kind of subtle.

That little 3" sander you see them using in the pictures is your best friend. It's called a polisher, though. Searching the Net for "3 inch sander" won't get you anywhere.

Good review of basic heart failure through cases

Good review of basic heart failure through cases. Seemingly intended for general cardiologists. Touches on a few advanced heart failure topics (i.e. one chapter on transplant selection) but this textbook is not one intended for advanced heart failure training (no substantial coverage of mechanical support, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, cardiopulmonary stress testing, transplant management etc...). That said within scope of book, topics were covered well.

Excellent and authoritative coverage of clinically relevant topics. I was enamored with the chapters on atrial fibrillation and cardio toxicity of cancer treatment but all the chapters are excellent.

This book provides a well-paced introduction to the Semantic Web, which is gaining in understanding and acceptance as new applications are realized in industry, academic, and government environments. It provides a succinct account of this new Web, its concepts, technologies and applications, and in particular demonstrates how Semantic Web technologies may be integrated and realised in several application domains including: software agents, semantic desktops, fine arts, and geospatial applications.

The book is intended as a reference text on the Semantic Web for software engineers, database and information technology students, academics and practitioners. It differs from other available books on the topic because, rather than presenting the Semantic Web as a quilt of disconnected topics, it provides a comprehensible body of concepts and related technologies. The book reflects the authors’ experience in research, graduate teaching, corporate training, industry and government projects grounded on the Semantic Web.

unsolved semantic web

The fact that the book comes out of NASA is a good indicator of how some large organisations are taking seriously the rise of the Semantic Web. It explains how the current Web (the so-called 1.0 version) has its limitations, despite its huge success. That success is due to the construction of webpages, that are meant for human visual and manual comprehension. The mixture of presentation and content in a typical webpage is immensely aggravating if you want to construct ways to extract meaning.

In an effort to rise above 1.0, the book talks about many software technologies that have arisen. The base technology is surely XML. From the text, you can think of XML as HTML, except that you, the author, get to define the tags. Whereas HTML comes with hardwired tags.

But while XML is a great start, the problems only begin. While you, a human, can now define tags, the meaning and intent of what you define still has to be discerned by others. If this can only be done manually, then we are only slightly better off than 1.0. How to do this programmatically? This, in essence, is what the book devotes most of its space to. Ontologies have to be defined. Terms and meanings tied together. Then there are Web Services. So that organisations can build automated interactions with others. Perhaps to facilitate e-commerce. Or to extend and automate a supply chain. An entire panoply of standards has arisen; described as WS-*. Like Web Service Description Language. And Web Service Business Process Execution Language. Very easy to trip over some of the book's jargon. Unfortunately, you have to get used to it.

Much is still unresolved. You get an appreciation of where we are, and how far we have to go.
