Singh, a hospice worker with training in psychology and an avid interest in religion, here combines a Kubler-Ross-like approach to death and dying with an Eastern religious take on finitude. She questions our sense of death as an "outrage" and her book is filled with the cornerstones of Buddhism and Tibetan religion, ideas that provide no easy comfort ("Our fear of death is grounded in a strong sense of the 'I'"). Some of Singh's consolations are not as strong-minded as this analysis of the ego, however. Occasionally, she uses insights that are hardly transcendent ("As we enter the Nearing Death Experience, both emotion and cognition clear.... Beatitudes flow naturally from our being, now a vehicle for of Spirit"). She is at her most perceptive when she seeks to explain why death is so frightening to us: "We are able to maintain the illusion of a separate self... able to maintain it until we enter death row. The moment we receive a terminal prognosis is the moment that fiction begins to transform into documentary." Singh works with terminal patients and can give careful accounts of dying bodies and minds, yet she also notes that the living in fact have no idea what death is like. Nonetheless, her book serves a wise and moving expression of the living helping the dying and should give solace to those facing death as well as to their friends and family.

A great and helpful book!

I just finished this book. It began as my 2014 Lenten reading, and it took me until today to finish it, but it was all worth it.
It is hard reading, not only because the material is very dense at times -I can handle that easily in other books if they hold my interest- but mainly because the book forced me to go deep into my own fear of death and dying.
The main thing I got out of it is a map of the dying process that goes beyond Kubler-Ross' stages of grief and into a profound description of what may happen as we melt into death, map that both our Western civilization and Christianity lack.
This will help me to be a better companion to those who are in their deathbed, and hopefully to me when my time comes.

The Grace in Dying is a masterpiece!

Having been a social worker and a Hospice volunteer for 4 years I got so much out of this extraordinary and magnificent book a few years ago. Also, with contemplative prayer a part of my life for over 30 years, it truly seemed to fit the path I was following. But, rereading it recently after the death of my husband of 44 years a year ago, it has been a profound experience. I want to copy every underline (and there are many!) to help my children understand what is going on as I too slip into the wonderful transition that lies ahead. There is a chapter toward the end, At the Edge of Life, that for me would be perfect instructions for them to follow . . . but then, they will have their own path. I whole heartedly recommend this book to all who work with the dying, those who want a clear picture of the dying and transforming processes in life and to those who might have experienced the death of a loved one and want to understand it more fully. It has been a great gift in my life.

In trying to cope with my family member's impending demise ...

In trying to cope with my family member's impending demise, I've been struggling spiritually how to process/make sense of life without her. While spiritual, I'm not religious i.e. no church fellowship to lean on or gain support from. So my journey has been vastly one in solitude. I've leaned on books instead and I must say, in the end it was this book that single-handedly put the ineffable into words so that my mind can understand. All along, my soul had known as it has always had known but it was my mind that couldn't grasp it and this book made all things clear, understandable. It's Tolle's books + snippets from all religious beliefs combined.
I can let go now.

I have used this commentary for twenty years.

I purchased this commentary as a young lawyer teaching Sunday School in 1980, and it has helped me communicate the stories in this book to many. I found the book useful as a layman and after attending seminary found it remained helpful at the scholarly level as well. Baldwin breathes life into the fabulous stories with which Daniel begins - stories usually taught to children and rarely preached or made the subject of adult Bible study, and the book is most helpful in illuminating these stories - the four Hebrew youths in captivity, the fiery furnace, the lions' den, and the writing on the wall. The more eschatological material that forms the latter part of the prophet's book is well treated, and the author avoids falling into the abyss of too closely pressing the details. It is a sound book in a sound series (Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries), and should help anyone teach, preach or simply enjoy the faith stories of Daniel and his friends.

Baldwin holds to traditional veiw of authorship and give good support for it. Good defense of an exilic date.

Baldwin said, "The predominate message is that God's people will experience suffering and be threatened with extinction, but that will not be the end of the story because their God is living and all-powerful God who will get glory by vindicating His name and who will save them" (66). She points out that God is sovereignly ruling over the affairs of men to bring about His purpose, and will one day establish His perfect kingdom.

Baldwin has called the seventy sevens the most difficult text of the book. She takes a symbolic interpretation. According to her, the seventy sevens are symbolic periods of time starting at Cyrus's decree and ending with Christ's second advent. There is no gap in the seventy sevens. The sixty-ninth seven corresponds to Christ's first coming. This forces the last seven to be very disproportional

The strength of Baldwin's commentary is the introduction. It makes up roughly one third of the commentary. She gives strong support for the historicity of Daniel and the traditional view of authorship and date. Her additional note on the "Son of Man" is another strong point of her book. If someone is looking for a good introduction and a brief commentary, Baldwin is a good fit. The brevity, however, is the weakness of the commentary. The author overlooks some intriguing parts of the text. For example, there is no discussion about the identity of the "prince of the Persian kingdom" in chapter 10 verse 13. One of the strangest verses in the Bible only gets one little paragraph with no detail. She has little to say about the stone cutout without human hands. Such interesting details deserve more attention than is given in this commentary. As a whole this is a good conservative commentary, although, it is a little dated. Not recommend for an in-depth study of Daniel. I strongly recommend Stephen R. Miller's commentary on Daniel in the New American Commentary series.

I used several commentaries for teaching a very small group bible study on Daniel and preferred Baldwin's book over them all. The NIV commentary was too simplistic for my taste, and is geared mainly for direct use in small group studies. For Old Testament studies, the NIV version of the Bible has numerous errors on critical verses, some on messianic prophecies, as in Isaiah 7:14. I have numerous jewish commentaries which I have acquired from Brookline, MA, and the English translation is closest to the New American Standard Bible which is used, thankfully, at most seminaries. For my study of Daniel, I used the jewish commentary from Soncino press.
Daniel is probably the easiest book of the Bible to read, (my favorite), yet, carefully read, has some of the most difficult passages to interpret in all of scripture. Baldwin deals with these in sections entitled additional notes and presents all of the differing interpretations regarding them which I believe is wise when dealing with prophecies that have yet to be fulfilled.
I love the Tyndale series too, but, if anything, I encourage you to read the book of Daniel itself.
As a postscript, I must add that William Tyndale gave us the English Bible. He was martyred in Antwerp, Belgium in 1536. He spoke much about the "powers that be" which is actually taken from Romans 13:1.

You Bought the Rolex But Forgot the BMW?

Recall the last time you presented a gift to someone. Was it really a gift for them, or did you only give the gift so that the recipient would assume the symbolic properties of the item, and therefore become more like the person you would like them to be? How about your last major purchase-was it a replacement for something that no longer fits your standards, now that your standards no longer fit your past purchases? An individual would be hard pressed to come up with, let alone answer questions like these without serious thought and reflection, yet these and many others come to mind while reading "Culture and Consumption" by Grant McCracken.
Mr. McCracken beckons us to question ourselves, our motives, and the whole rationale behind what we are doing when we make a purchase in the marketplace, whether it is for ourselves or someone else. While popular opinion and social scientific study purport that materialism is one of the things that is most wrong with our society, the author shows that the goods that are so often identified as the unhappy, destructive preoccupation of a materialistic society are in fact one of the chief instruments of its survival-one of the ways in which its order is created and maintained.
While Mary Ellen Roach and others like her declared that yes, man likes to control things, Mr. McCracken goes many steps forward. He disregards and even insults former theorists on consumption in an attempt to reverse the gears of thinking on modern consumption practices. Accordingly, clothing is not language. In fact, clothing is "quite unlike language and best communicates cultural meaning when it departs from the syntagmatic principle on which language operates." Also, the popular trickle down theory of diffusion is actually "an upward "chase and flight" pattern created by a subordinate group that "hunts" upper class status makers and a superordinate social group that moves on in a hasty flight to new ones." Quite modestly, the author admits that his work "begins the rapprochement. It does not pretend to accomplish it."
Mr. McCracken demonstrates that all the other theories about consumption are wrong or at least flawed. He questions them, and then points the way to a new understanding of how and why we are consumers. By his decree, our culture follows very distinct consumption patterns. With his review of the history of consumption to the present day, the author shows a consistent and lineal progression to the mass misunderstanding of today's marketplace. According to him, culture and consumption are inextricably intertwined, and he has attempted to unweave the elements of this intimate rapport for our perusal.
He casts doubt upon our forefathers with startling clarity. What is reality to us-something we sometimes feel developed in complicated, pretentious ways-is in fact only the direct result of our revolutionary, rebellious founding. Mr. McCracken demands that we reevaluate and reconstruct the history of Western Civilization. All that we were, all that we are, and all that we strive to be is dictated to us by our consumption patterns. While one would hope for free will and liberty under democracy, in reality we are slaves to consumption.
While our consumption once freed us from our past, it now entraps us and dictates our futures. What the author terms the Diderot effect sums this up nicely. Basically it states that when one takes the cultural meaning of a new good as the carrier of privileged meaning, they are forced to make all the rest of their possessions consistent with it. To fail in this capacity would make our semblance inaccurate and inconsistent. With that Rolex you had better buy a BMW. To house that BMW you had better buy a condo on the beach. To fill that condo you had better buy Ethan Allen furniture. To sit on that furniture you had better get a Shar-Pei. To pet that Shar-Pei you had better get a gorgeous and wealthy spouse. When you're through with these "common" luxuries, you better collect Rembrandts, Van Goghs, and Picassos until your lust for the obscure is satiated. By that time you'll be dead and you can leave your compulsive obsessions to your children so that they can continue the warped tradition of bridging their ways to the ever elusive displaced meaning-that gap between the real and ideal in social life-like moths to a flame.
These points deserve to be more than noted. Throughout history, anthropologists have chosen to study the supply side of the Industrial Revolution. Mr. McCracken offers a most refreshing viewpoint of the demand side of the equation. With unique insight, Mr. McCracken uses clothing as a prototypical item of contemporary culture and shows us how it has shaped and dominated our lives. Throughout this collection of essays, he tears down the old order of consumption theory and constructs a new one-one that has never seen the light of day.
For anyone ready to face the marketplace through marketing or advertising, and begin the long overdue look at how and why we consume, there could not be a more congenial conversationalist than Mr. McCracken.

I bought it for a topics in marketing and international business class and it is great! It has very interesting ideas and it gives you great facts of how the consumption culture began and the way that it has impacted our present.

determinism, anyone?

In "Culture & Consumption", McCracken takes the view that we are all beholden to our culture and that it is nearly impossible to break out of it. Unlike the reviewer who gave this volume 5 stars, I feel as though it is overly determinstic in its' approach. There is almost no room for any type of individual behavior, as this does not really exist for McCracken. The book is also heavy on a kind of behavioral pop psych dogma and he does not take any other modern consumption ideas into account. In the end, check this book out from the library if you really want to read it, otherwise you're just throwing your money away on overused dogmatic tripe.

A Very, Very Good Intro to The Plagues and the Rise of Epidemiology

For reasons ununderstood to even myself, I love factual books about epidemiology, especially the plague and influenza. I've read a lot of books on the subjects. This was a particularly good one.

Very confused book

If you are looking for a book on a topic like"The Black Death" or some such turn elsewhere. This book conflates at least three major historical incidence of plague and it can be difficult and confusing to know which one the author is writing about. I don't agree with the author that basically plague is plague, whether it's from the 4th or 5th century BCE or an outbreak in the 6th century CE or 19th century CE China. The book also tries to convey that our ancestors must have greatly inflated death counts and social disruption, all the while using so-called experts to basically say they're guessing just as much as the older, more "imaginative" generations. And wasting time pretending to be a literary critic for low and high brow artworks is space that could have been used to better craft the storyline he's trying to promote.

Three stars for some interesting information on new historical and medical perspectives.

I teach Kinder, and was a bit disappointed in it.....too over their heads....and don't like the word "stupid," so I substituted it when I read it. Cute idea having an older child be the "Dear Abby," so to speak!

Kids Love It!

This book is one of a series of books by the same author that are both whimsical and informative. I have been using all of them with my second grade guidance classes and the kids eat them up. They love the 13 year old advice columnist and the illustrations are great conversation pieces. Grat for a family library, a school library, or a grandparent gift.

"This very satisfying book has multiple strengths. The text has marvelous clarity, as do the mathematical demonstrations. All are synoptic, while simultaneously explaining the underlying, fine details. The useful organization is enhanced by superb graphics. Although the author has many technical capabilities, with both range and depth, below I’ll give just one illustrative example of the excellent result. Major themes of modern computation and modeling, as applied to biology, include issues of nonlinearities, chaotic dynamics, emergent properties, and instabilities. About the Author

“Professor Joe” - as he is called by his students - is a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Medicine and Chair of the Computational & Systems Biology Interdepartmental Program at UCLA - an undergraduate research-oriented program he nurtured and honed over several decades. As an active full-time member of the UCLA faculty for nearly half a century, he also developed and led innovative graduate PhD programs, including Computational Systems Biology in Computer Science, and Biosystem Science and Engineering in Biomedical Engineering. He has mentored students from these programs since 1968, as Director of the UCLA Biocybernetics Laboratory, and was awarded the prestigious UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and Eby Award for Creative Teaching in 2003, and the Lockeed-Martin Award for Teaching Excellence in 2004. Professor Joe also is a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society. Visiting professorships included stints at universities in Canada, Italy, Sweden and the UK and he was a Senior Fulbright-Hays Scholar in Italy in 1979.

Professor Joe has been very active in the publishing world. As an editor, he founded and was Editor-in-Chief of the Modeling Methodology Forum - a department in seven of the American Journals of Physiology - from 1984 thru 1991. As a writer, he authored or coauthored both editions of Feedback and Control Systems (Schaum-McGraw-Hill 1967 and 1990), more than 200 research articles, and recently published his opus textbook: Dynamic Systems Biology Modeling and Simulation (Academic Press/Elsevier November 2013 and February 2014).

Much of his research has been based on integrating experimental neuroendocrine and metabolism studies in mammals and fishes with data-driven mathematical modeling methodology - strongly motivated by his experiences in “wet-lab”. His seminal contributions to modeling theory and practice are in structural identifiability (parameter ambiguity) analysis, driven by experimental encumbrances. He introduced the notions of interval and quasi-identifiablity of unidentifiable dynamic system models, and his lab has developed symbolic algorithmic approaches and new internet software (web app COMBOS) for computing identifiable parameter combinations. These are the aggregate parts of otherwise unidentifiable models that can be quantified - with broad application in model reduction (simplification) and experiment design. His long-term contributions to quantitative understanding of thyroid hormone production and metabolism in mammals and fishes have recently been crystallized into web app THYROSIM - for internet-based research and teaching about thyroid hormone dynamics in humans.

Last but not least, Professor Joe is a passionate straight-ahead jazz saxophone player (alto and tenor), an alternate career begun in the 1950s in NYC at Stuyvesant High School - temporarily suspended when he started undergrad school, and resumed again in middle-age. He recently added flute to his practice schedule and he and his band - Acoustically Speaking -can be found occasionally gigging in Los Angeles or Honolulu haunts.

I had this book for a mathematical physiology course for my PhD in Biomedical Engineering. I loved this book even though some of the questions at the end had some grammatical errors. The professor that taught this course was familiar with the author of the book and actually got be interested in this area of research. I honestly wish I went further with this stuff!

Great book!

Your book has enriched the course on modeling and physiology that I teach to our juniors. Last year we were able to cover the first 8 chapters in a semester plagued by ice-days and closings. The treatment is coherent and blends biology, engineering and mathematics in a sound way.
