About the Author
Cynthia Aldinger is founder and Executive Director of LifeWays North America. She has lectured and presented internationally, directs trainings and seminars across the United States, and is an Adjunct Faculty member at Rudolf Steiner College in California. She served fourteen years on the board of the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America, is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and a supporter of the Alliance for Childhood. A former Waldorf Kindergarten teacher, Cynthia received her Waldorf teaching certificate at Emerson College in Sussex, England and her Associate Business certificate from the University of Oklahoma. A mother and grandmother, Cynthia has been married to Michael for almost forty years. Her passion is the preservation of the playful spirit of childhood and helping to create healthy, comfortable and secure environments for children, families, and caregivers. Mary O'Connell has been working in the field of Early Childhood Education for fourteen years. She began her work as a Parent Educator and Volunteer Coordinator at the Family Center in Milwaukee, and quickly saw the need for quality child care. She opened her own home child care program a few years later, and completed the LifeWays training. After five years in her home, she opened LifeWays Early Childhood Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2002, followed by LifeWays Child Development Center in Hartland, Wisconsin in 2006. Mary serves as President of LifeWays of Wisconsin, Inc., and is also a member of the LifeWays North America Board. She teaches in the Midwest LifeWays training, offers seminars and lectures on early childhood, and is a LifeWays consultant. She has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mary and her husband, Jim, have three children, Kyle (17), Ryan (16), and Kathleen (13).

Taking Home as the Model

Taking home as the model isn't rocket science--but, unfotunately, it isn't what's happening in conventional chilcare today. Cynthia and Mary have provided a practical, well-articulated despription of the LifeWays approach that not only holds your interest, but can be life-changing for everyone who cares for and about young children.
The book is geared toward childcare providers, both in homes and in centers, with practical chapters on "Creating Your Community of Care" and various business questions. The early chapters on the LifeWays approach and on "Rhythms, Routines and the Living Arts" would also be valuable for parents who are home with young children.
I would especially recommend the book (and the LifeWays training, see [...]) to all childcare providers or anyone who is thinking of opening a program in her home.

Absolutely loved this book

Home Away from Home was exactly the book I was looking for! I run a large family child care home in Northern California and have been trying to create a loving, home like atmosphere for the children and families I'm blessed to care for. Unfortunately, with parents fretting about kindergarten readiness for their 3-year olds and so many products and preschools that prey on the fears of families not doing all they can to prepare their tots for the 'real world', I've been finding myself being blown off course, trying to help the parents see the value in what we do here. This book completely inspired me and I've already applied for the nearest LifeWays training course. Not only were the concepts in the book written very clearly, with great information I could share with my clients, backed up by some very recognizable leaders in the field of early childhood, it was written in such a way that drew me in to every experience! I could practically smell lavender or soup cooking or bread baking. I could feel the sense of calm and being cared for that someone brushing my hair or gently moisturizing me would give. I could nearly hear the soft sounds of a kinderharp or a gentle story being told as I snuggled into my bedding with my very own, lovingly made doll. The feeling of family and community that the rhythm of festivals and gardening with my friends...All in all, I can't say enough about this wonderful book. My passion in caring for children and childhood has been rekindled and it's so helpful to have a path being forged ahead of me!

Ever wonder how we can better serve those in childcare?

I have been in early childhood education for over 20 years but have always felt like a piece of the puzzle was missing. A couple of years ago, I was able to attend a Lifeways workshop and I knew I had found what I was looking for. In the book, "Home Away from Home," readers are given a thorough overview into a style of childcare that nurtures everyone involved - the children, parents and caregiver. The Lifeways approach can be used in either a home daycare or center. Activities such as stoytelling, picking vegetables from the garden for lunch, and feeling a warm wash cloth on your hands and face after eating are part of the everyday routine. Children are also given substantial time for creative play both indoors and out. By being in the company of the same caregivers as the child grows, a deep understanding takes place and the child feels loved and appreciated. Parents aren't forgotten either. They are encouraged to linger, help their child with their routines and attend special gatherings and celebrations. By the time you are finished with this book, you will have a good understanding of what the Lifeways approach looks like. This book also delves into many of the questions you might have about how to make this approach work for you.

The third book of the KAGE trilogy puts a luscious cherry atop what is one of the most riveting male/male romance series that I have ever read. If you have not read these books, run, don’t walk, and get them. You will not be disappointed. Mixed martial arts fighter Kage is the ultimate mix of alpha, intrigue, and hotness, and college cutie Jamie is the personification of luscious boy-next-door with pluck. When these two laid eyes on each other sparks ignited and author Maris Black fanned the resulting flame into a fiery inferno of profound romance that is hotter than a Molotov cocktail. I could do nothing but keep turning the pages, muttering “Duh-am…”

This latest book finds Kage and Jamie confronting Kage’s personal demons and outing themselves to Jamie’s family and friends. The events are not without complications as Kage’s villainous uncle finally shows his true face. I’m not one to write spoilers so I’ll just speak on what makes this book just as sensational and dizzyingly perfect as the previous two.

For one, the pacing is dynamic; there are no wasted words. From the dialogue through the mesmerizing behind-the-scene glimpses of the world of MMA fighting, each episode contained the appropriate amount of stimulation to make my heart rev a little faster with anticipation. Events play out at a good clip, but grant Kage and Jamie plenty of time to convey a full range of believable emotions that made me love these well-developed characters even more.

Secondly, all of the love scenes are just that, love scenes. From the lust-induced, rock hard, visceral sex scenes to the couple’s playful teasing encounters, the language and events are doused in the sweetness of romance. This is lovemaking at its best… Kage and Jamie were falling deeply in love and with each scintillating scene I felt privileged to experience their joy. And perhaps that’s the secret of this series’ success…you get to experience falling in love again and again.

And lastly, kudos to the author for getting the nuances of the fight game correct and showing restraint in sharing overmuch. Excellent research and skillful information weaving translated into wonderful vignettes of color that put a lovely stamp of masculinity on the story and added a tangible blood-sweat-and-bone note that is the true essence of the fight game. Grounded in authentic details, a fighter’s diet, making weight for a fight, the press conferences, and the adrenaline overload, the love story of Kage and Jamie plays out beautifully and the end is to-die-for. This is definitely a not to be missed story and series. I almost envy a new-to-the-series reader’s awaiting journey, but—yet another gift—the books are eminently rereadable!

Ahhhh! That ending! I am in love all over again with this series. Kage you are a boss! I loved that last chapter so much! There is no way that I can see it as the ending when really it was an epic beginning!

Now, there were some parts that were totally sad to read. I cannot imagine what Kage must have felt, about everything he went through in life. He is such a strong man to be able to just keep living and doing what he loves (including Jamie lol) to know he was manipulated so badly by his uncle was surreal. How could a man be so horrible to his nephew? To control him in every aspect, to try and force him to live a life of unhappiness just because it didn't fit with his plan was sickening. I was so glad when he was out of the picture.

Jamie as always was so adorable, I was happy to read how comfortable he was with Kage now that they were finally reunited how they were supposed to be. Daddy Atwood still takes the cake as my favourite family member. And I was so happy to read that Daddy Atwood gave Kage the "talk" .... Sigh how adorable.

Now I just want to read about them all married with kids, or dogs or even gold fish. Their lives are really only now beginning and I am so happy for them. At the end of this book, it definitely put a smile on my face (after the roller coaster of emotions that is lol) I loved it. 5 beautiful stars!

Wow. This went somewhere I didn't expect. Put all three books together and it's an intense action movie. Couldn't put it down and I'm still processing some of it, kind of can't believe parts of it. At the center, though, remains Jamie and Kage and their obsessive need and love for each other. Leaves you breathless.

HOOK & EYE ROUTE

A very interesting book on how the L & N got it's line between Atlanta and Cincinnati (which was called the Hook & Eye line) and why part of it was re-routed into a new line.

Very descriptive of the types of locomotives and equipment used, plus several interesting personal stories of the men that worked these lines. All pictures are in black and white, as are a few maps of the system.

If you are an L & N rail buff, you want this book.

Brilliant book! It really helped me understand the family system, and it has the best insights for families I've read until now. I come from wealthy family, where we all perfect from the outside, but imbalanced from inside. This book really helped me undo every family issue, and find that balance again! Highly recommended!

Keep buying this book

For my friends after it helped to to understand why I had certain behaviors after growing up with a physically and verbally abusive mother. How bad was she? She would be in prison if she had done to me today what she did to me 40 years ago. Breaking free of that situation was fantastic, this book helped! You don't have to read it all the way through, I let it fall open and started reading. A couple of my friends did that too. Helped them a lot. Oh, and I really, really, really, don't like self help books, but this one is different!

About the Author
Bent Flyvbjerg is Founding Chair of Major Programme Management at Oxford University's Saïd Business School and Director of the Oxford Centre for Major Programme Management. Previously, he was Professor in the Department of Planning and Development at Aalborg University. He is the author of the highly successful Making Social Science Matter (Cambridge, 2001) and Rationality and Power (1998).

Nils Bruzelius is Associate Professor at Stockholm University and an independent consultant on transport and planning.

A really interesting read about the finance of large projects

Megaprojects and Risk: An Anatomy of Ambition (2003) by Bent Flyvbjerg is a dry but interesting look at how expensive projects are chronically over budget, under utilised and delivered late.

The book gives the strong impression that the big budget government and private projects like the Channel Tunnel, the Øresund Bridge and many rail projects are chronically misrepresented in financial modelling that precedes them.

Flyvberg and his team have analysed many big public infrastructure projects and have found that 9 out 10 cost more than planned, 9 out of 10 are late and 9 out of 10 are not utilised as much as projected. Roads projects, are, however, quite often used more than expected It’s a terrible record. The record of rail projects is the worst, Average traffic on rail projects was 61% of the forecast level and sometimes as low as 25%.

After looking at these projects the authors found that those involved in making plans had lots of pressure put on them to cook forecasts. Essentially the promoters of the projects are dishonest and are either after political gain or are set to build the project and personally benefit with the risk generally taken up by taxpayers.

The book suggests a framework for better assessment with a range of forecasts made and investigation of how close the forecasts are to what happens after the fact. They also suggest that private money be solicited and made to take some of the risk. If it can’t be obtained it is a good suggestion that the project was not really viable.

It could be argued that the projects that are not viable but that are huge achievements should be undertaken anyway. This is a legitimate point. However, deception in the initial phases should still be reduced as much as possible. Part of the problem is described by the authors as being that projects are sometimes chosen on the basis of who has the most dishonest figures.

It’s a really interesting book that anyone who believes in infrastructure deficits and that more public spending in infrastructure is required should definitely read.

Zero Management Skills On Public Projects

Proof that there is absolutely zero management skill out there. Coupled with the political bent on these megaprojects provides an atmosphere which is likely to continue with the terrible results we see. Worst case ever was the H3 freeway on Oahu; something like 17 or 18 times the original estimate. With so much history you would think the process should have improved. Now what was that Einstein adage about doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. If we had operated this way during the height of the space race, we wouldn't have had enough money in the USA to pay the bill. For shame!!!

Oldie but goodie

We had this book in our home library when I was young. It was in one of those Reader's Digest condensed books. I enjoyed reading about the buyer of a bridal department and the problems she had with her employees, the brides, and her new floor manager. When I reread it this time, I found some parts that had been cut to condense the book and though it was interesting, I realized that Reader's Digest does a pretty good job of condensing.

Well Written Fun read

Fantastically funny book! If you've ever gotten married, been to a wedding, or been related to a bride (oh heck, if you're human), you'll find this book hilarious! (If you've ever worked retail though, this may be the literary embodiment of your nightmare.) D'arcy's escapades and adventures as a bridal salon sales consultant have kept everyone to whom I've lent this book in stitches. I originally read this book as part of a Reader's Digest monthly selection my uncle had bought YEARS before, and I immediately had to go out and dig up a copy of the book itself. It's worth the read, and it will leave you with a smile on your face.

Coffee, Tea, or Me? moved into a department store

Another of those sixties 'career exposes' about fetching young ladies in glossy city-girl careers, this book follows our intrepid heroine D'Arcy Evans as she lives the glam life of an assistant buyer in the bridal department of Fellowes Fifth Avenue, a fictional store that probably won't tell Macy's OR Gimbels anything.

D'Arcy is plagued by the advent of Russell Kirkpatrick, the new micromanaging floor manager, who also just happens to be the son-in-law of a Fellowes bigwig.

All in all, it's a fun romp through those rosy days of yore when bridal department customers and employees alike squealed in horror if a man dared cross the threshhold of the place. I found it fun to compare with my own experiences, working in a department store in the early 1980s while putting myself through secretarial school.

Competition and Unique Features of the Current text: At the present time, there is no comprehensive and up-to-date competing textbook. Almost all of the chapters are original and specially written for this volume. There is no real competition. Other texts are primarily based on out-of-date reprints (e.g. Dilemmas in Corrections-edited by Geoffrey Albert and Ken Haas published by Waveland Press–most of the articles are from 14 to 32 years old;  Correctional Counseling and Treatment, edited by Peter C. Kratcoski is also published by Waveland Press and includes well-written, but 14 to 25 year old articles; Roxbury Press does the same thing, and publishes so-called correctional texts that are more like history books. Sage Publications has a book in the second edition entitled Counseling Criminal Justice Offenders (2004) by Ruth E. Masters. This book is well-written and includes a useful glossary, but unfortunately is way out-of-date. The majority of the references are from the 1970s and 1980s. If my students were interested in majoring in history, or the history of correctional treatment then outdated chapters would make sense. However, there is no current major or required course on the History of Criminal Justice or corrections at universities in this country.  The field of criminal justice is rapidly changing, and it is imperative for our students —future criminal justice professionals — to be required to read the most up-to-date, readable, and informative texts possible. Fortunately, Prentice-Hall’s criminal justice and corrections textbooks are revised every 3 to 5 years, and are always well-written, up-to-date, and comprehensive.

 

Need for this textbook: most students and professors are intrigued by crime, criminals, and the prison system. Almost all Americans will become a crime victim at some point in their lifetime so the interest in breaking the cycle of criminality through correctional counseling and treatment has also rapidly increased.  In view of all of the changes within the criminal justice system, and the fact that there is no up-to-date text currently available for the correctional counseling or the correctional treatment courses,  this new book is critically needed.

 

Audience for this Text: Most criminal justice undergraduate programs offer either a correctional counseling or correctional treatment course elective, and almost all Master’s programs in criminal justice require completion of a correctional counseling or treatment course. The proposed book is being specially designed as the required text for the latter mentioned courses.

About the Author

Albert R. Roberts, Ph.D., B.C.E.T.S., D.A.C.F.E., is Professor of Criminal Justice and Social Work (former Chairperson), and Director of Faculty and Curriculum Development, Administration of Justice and Interdisciplinary Criminal Justice Programs in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Livingston College Campus at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in Piscataway. He has been a tenured professor at Rutgers University since 1989. Dr. Roberts received an M.A. degree in Sociology from the Graduate Faculty of Long Island University in 1967, and a D.S.W. in 1978 (which became a Ph.D. in 1981) from the School of Social Work and Community Planning at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Dr. Roberts is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Brief Treatment and Crisis Intervention journal (Oxford University Press). Dr. Roberts recently edited a special issue of the Brief Treatment and Crisis Intervention journal on stress, crisis, and trauma intervention strategies in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorism attacks.

 

Dr. Roberts is the founding and current Editor of the 41-volume Springer Series on Social Work (1980 to present), and the 8 volume Springer Family Violence Series. He is the author, co-author, or editor of approximately 160 scholarly publications, including numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and 25 books. His recent books and articles include: Handbook of Domestic Violence Intervention Strategies (2002), Oxford University Press; Social Workers' Desk Reference (includes 146 chapters and is co-edited by Gilbert J. Greene, Oxford University Press, 2002), Crisis Intervention Handbook: Assessment, Treatment and Research, 2nd edition (2000, Oxford University Press), Juvenile Justice Sourcebook (In Press, Oxford University Press, N.Y.), and Battered Women and Their Families: Intervention Strategies and Treatment Approaches, 2nd edition (1998, Springer Publishing Co.).

 

Dr. Roberts current projects include: Directing the 18-credit Certificate Program in Criminal Justice Policies and Practices at Livingston College of Rutgers University; training crisis intervention workers and clinical supervisors in crisis assessment and crisis intervention strategies; training police officers and administrators in domestic violence policies and crisis intervention. He is a lifetime member of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), has been a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) since 1974, and has been listed in Who's Who in America since 1992. Professor Roberts is the faculty sponsor to Rutgers' Sigma Alpha Kappa chapter of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society (1991-present).

Very bad copy but easy read for class

Worse book copy I have ever purchased. There is not one page that I can fully read, as the print is barely on the paper. Book came with some pages falling out. If I did not need for class, I would have returned immediately.
