About the Author
Dawn Apgar, PhD, LSW, ACSW, has helped thousands of social workers across the country pass the examinations associated with all levels of licensure. In recent years, she has consulted in numerous states to assist with establishing licensure test preparation programs, including training the instructors.
Dr. Apgar has done research on licensure funded by the American Foundation for Research and Consumer Education in Social Work Regulation and is currently chairperson of her state's social work licensing board. She is a past President of the New Jersey Chapter of NASW and has been on its National Board of Directors. In 2014, the Chapter presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Apgar has taught in both undergraduate and graduate social work programs and has extensive direct practice, policy, and management experience in the field.

This is a great study guide. It was the only one I used and between studying with this guide and reading through the DSM, I passed the ASWB Clinical exam with flying colors 16 years after I finished my MSW. I highly recommend it. If you follow her tips, and use the guide as an indicator of what you know and what you need to know a little bit better you will do well.

Passed the LCSW!

Passed the LCSW the first try! I graduated with my MSW in 2008 and knew I had a lot of reviewing to do. i know this book helped me get all the reviewing that I needed. I read it twice, had a really good DSM 5 Power Point, and used a LCSW App (Pocket Prep purchased). I think the test was really hard. I thought it would be more detail about theories but not the test I got...was mostly ethical questions. What would you do first...apply Maslow and the EatPie (in book) to most questions. Very clinical...dah. I studied for 4 months to build my confidence. This book has so many benefits. Test anxiety, getting things in order in your mind, ways to study and test, and the practice test. What I liked about the practice test was not so much that the questions asked would be on the test but each question made me think and go back and study that specific topic. I was surprised how well I did on the test. The App, I mentioned above was super hard so I was even more prepared..probably overly. I agree with others that reviewed this book, the mile wide and 1 inch deep knowledge is the way to think about your studying for the LCSW. Remember safety first on a lot of questions. Very logical and book smart is what you need to get use to for the test. Good luck and I'm sure you will do great. I am so releaved I passed!
